Complete Guide to Becoming a Digital Nomad

Income first, then visas, then a base: the sequence that works, the costs by city, and the parts nobody puts in the Instagram caption.

A digital nomad is someone who earns online and chooses where to live by the month rather than by the job. The lifestyle is now well-served (visas exist, coworking is everywhere, the communities are large) and still misunderstood: it is work with a view, not a holiday with a laptop. This guide covers the sequence that works, with figures from our destination database.

1. Income before location

Secure the income first: a remote role with an employer who has agreed in writing to the arrangement, a freelance pipeline of at least two clients, or a business that already pays you. The city comes after. Budget for the first three months without counting new income; new clients take longer than planned.

2. Taxes and the employer question

Your tax residency does not change because you bought a flight. Most countries treat 183 days as the residency trigger, your home country may keep taxing you regardless (the US does by citizenship), and your employer may have payroll obligations where you sit. Take advice before you go; the cost of a consultation is trivial next to a surprise. Nothing on this site is tax advice.

3. Visas that exist for this

Since 2020 the options have multiplied: Portugal's D8, Spain's and Greece's nomad visas, Croatia's permit, Hungary's White Card, Thailand's DTV, Colombia's Visa V, Brazil's VITEM XIV, Japan's six-month status, Korea's workcation visa, Malaysia's DE Rantau; and the no-paperwork options of Georgia (a year visa-free) and Albania (a year for Americans). Each has an income threshold and a last-verified date in the finder. Many nomads simply rotate on tourist entries, which is legal to enter on and a grey area to work on; know the difference.

4. Choosing a base: the five things that matter

Internet (fixed line in the apartment, not the cafe), time-zone overlap with the people who pay you, monthly cost against income, a community you can find in the first week, and a climate you can work in. The Nomad Circuit Builder scores all five; the U.S. working hours page and the under $2,000 page isolate two of them.

5. What it costs

Our mid-range monthly estimate (one-bedroom rent plus three-quarters of daily living) runs from roughly $1,000 to $1,300 in Chiang Mai, Hanoi, Da Nang and Siem Reap; $1,500 to $1,900 in Tbilisi, Medellín, Budapest, Mexico City and Kuala Lumpur; $2,200 to $2,800 in Lisbon, Barcelona, Split and Las Palmas; and $3,500-plus in Tokyo. Coworking adds $100 to $250. Flights between bases are the line everyone forgets.

6. The first month in a new city

Book a week, not a month: see the neighbourhoods, test the internet with a speed test at 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., then sign a monthly rental in person. Join the city's nomad or expat group before you land. Buy a local SIM or eSIM on day one and a coworking day pass on day two. Find the gym, the market and the laundry by day three; routine is what makes work possible.

7. The parts nobody mentions

Loneliness in month two, the admin of mail and banking from abroad, the slow erosion of fitness and sleep in a life without fixed routines, and the exhaustion of moving monthly. The nomads who last slow down: two or three bases a year, a home base to return to, and friendships maintained on purpose. See the annual circuit for the slow version.
