Coming home

Coming Home After Long-Term Travel

Reverse culture shock, the landing month, the CV, the money, the friendships and the restlessness: what the return actually involves and how to plan for it.

Nobody plans the return, and the return is the part that goes wrong. After six months or a year away, home is simultaneously unchanged and unrecognisable, the people you left have moved on, the money is lower than planned and the restlessness arrives in week three. This guide is about planning the landing with the same care as the departure.

Reverse culture shock is real

The supermarket's forty kinds of cereal, the cost of a coffee, conversations about things that no longer feel important, and the sense that nobody wants to hear about Laos for more than four minutes. It passes in a month or two; knowing it is coming is most of the cure. Keep one habit from the road (the morning walk, the market, the language practice) as an anchor.

The landing month

Budget it before you leave: three months of living costs at home, because the job search takes time and the first salary arrives a month after the first day. A bed arranged in advance (family, a friend's spare room, a short let), a phone plan, a bank card that works, and a quiet week before the admin starts.

The CV and the conversation

Put the trip on the CV in one line with a shape: what you did, what you learned, why it makes you better at the job. Languages learned, a job held abroad, a course completed, a project shipped, a budget managed across twelve countries, independence and judgement under uncertainty. Hiring managers respond well to a gap year with a thread and badly to one without; the thread is the thing to plan on the way out, not the way back.

The money

Reinstate the direct debits, the insurance, the pension contributions; check the tax position if the absence was long (residency rules differ by country); and expect to spend more in the first month than in any travel month. The money-last arithmetic runs in reverse on return.

Friendships

Some lapsed, some held; the ones that held will want you back and the ones that lapsed were lapsing anyway. Make the effort in the first fortnight, before the restlessness turns inward.

The restlessness

Week three: the urge to book another flight. Most returned travellers describe it; most who acted on it immediately regretted it. The usual resolution is a shape for the next year (work, a project, a base) with travel inside it, and the discovery that the road's lessons (less stuff, routines over possessions, a smaller circle) transfer to a settled life.

If the return does not take

Some people find after six months that home no longer fits, and plan the next departure properly: a remote income, a residence visa, a base abroad. The digital nomad and FIRE sections and the circuit builder are where that planning starts. There is no shame in either outcome; the trip did its job.
