Packing

Carry-On Only Backpacking

The method for travelling indefinitely with a bag that never leaves your side: what to cut, what to keep, and the three rules that make it work.

Carry-on only is less a packing style than a decision to stop owning things you do not use. The payoff is daily: no baggage fees, no lost luggage, no waiting at carousels, no decision about whether the bag is safe under the bus. Thousands of long-term travellers do it for years; the method is repeatable.

Rule one: the wash cycle sets the quantity

Pack clothes for a week, not for the trip. Seven days of underwear and socks, four or five tops, two bottoms, one layer, one shell. Laundry is cheap everywhere on the trail ($2 to $5 a kilo in Asia and Latin America) and a sink works when it is not. The packing list builder applies this rule to its clothing quantities.

Rule two: merino and quick-dry

Fabric choice is the difference between four tops and ten. Merino wool resists odour for days and dries overnight; synthetic quick-dry does the same without the price. Cotton holds sweat and takes two days to dry; leave it at home.

Rule three: everything earns its place twice

A sarong is a towel, a blanket, a temple cover-up and a beach mat. Sandals with a back strap do beaches, showers and city walking. A phone is the camera, the map, the e-reader and the boarding pass. Anything with one job needs a very good reason.

What people cut after a month

The second pair of jeans, the hairdryer, the travel pillow, the third pair of shoes, the just-in-case medication for conditions they do not have, the paperback library. What they add: a better rain shell, a dry bag, a second power bank.

Airline limits that matter

Dimensions are generous on most full-service carriers (55 × 40 × 20 cm is the common standard); weight is the trap on budget carriers in Asia and Europe, often 7 kg including the personal item. A 40-litre bag at 9 kg plus a daypack at 3 kg can be over. Wear the heavy layer, put the laptop in the daypack, and know which carriers weigh.

Liquids, knives and poles

Solid toiletries (shampoo bars, toothpaste tablets) remove the liquids problem entirely. Knives, multi-tools, trekking poles and full-size scissors do not fly in the cabin; buy or rent them at the destination.
