Overview

Zanzibar is two islands in one: Stone Town, the UNESCO-listed Swahili trading capital of carved doors, Omani palaces and the painful history of the slave market; and the east coast, where tidal lagoons, white sand and steady trade winds have made Paje one of Africa's kitesurfing capitals and, lately, a modest nomad base. It is more expensive than mainland Tanzania, cheaper than the Indian Ocean's resort islands, and a few hours from the Serengeti and Kilimanjaro.

Why visit

For an Indian Ocean beach stay with real culture and history attached, and a winter-sun base that costs less than the Caribbean.

Weather and best time to visit

Tropical with two rainy seasons: the long rains from mid-March to May (heavy, many places close) and the short rains in November. June to October is dry, breezy and the most pleasant (highs around 29°C); December to February is hotter and more humid but mostly dry. Kite seasons follow the trade winds.

Best time: June to October; December to February as a hotter second window.

Where to stay

Stone Town for history and the ferry; Paje and Jambiani for kitesurfing, nomads and long stays; Nungwi and Kendwa in the north for swimmable beaches at all tides and nightlife; Matemwe for quiet.

Neighbourhoods

Stone Town (history, ferry, markets), Paje and Jambiani (kitesurfing, nomads, long stays), Nungwi and Kendwa (swim-at-all-tides beaches, nightlife), Matemwe (quiet, diving), Michamvi (sunsets, The Rock).

Food

Zanzibar pizza and seafood skewers at Forodhani Gardens, urojo (Zanzibar mix soup), octopus curry, pilau and biryani, spice-farm lunches, The Rock restaurant for the postcard, and fresh fish grilled on the beach in Paje.

Getting around

Dala-dalas (shared minibuses) are cheap and slow; private transfers 30 to 50 dollars; scooter and car hire with an international permit; Azam ferries to Dar es Salaam (2 hours); short flights to the mainland parks.

Things to do

Stone Town walkThe old slave market and Anglican cathedral, the House of Wonders, the carved doors; a licensed guide is worth it.

By travel style

One destination database, seven views. Fit is an editorial score out of five.

Backpackers

Pricier than the mainland but the hostels in Paje and Nungwi are sociable and the beach is free; combine with a budget safari from Arusha.

Gap Year Travelers

Dive-master and kitesurf-instructor courses are the classic gap-year investments here; volunteering in Stone Town through established schools.

Digital Nomads

Paje works for a season if your work tolerates the occasional outage; wind, lagoon and a friendly regular crowd.

Long-Term World Travelers

The beach chapter of an East African overland: Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti and the Tazara railway are all reachable.

FIRE Travelers

Beautiful and affordable for a winter; healthcare and visas rule it out as a base for most.

Career Break Travelers

Learn to kitesurf or dive, study Swahili, volunteer, and let the pole pole rhythm do its work.

Older Backpackers

Comfortable beach lodges and Stone Town guesthouses make it easy; heat, humidity and basic medical cover make the dry season and good insurance essential.

Practical

Safety

Generally safe; petty theft on beaches and in Stone Town after dark, so walk in company and leave valuables locked. Beach boys' persistence is a nuisance rather than a danger.

Common scams

Papasi (touts) at the ferry and in Stone Town, overpriced 'official' taxis, tour operators without licences, and currency-exchange tricks. Book excursions through your accommodation or licensed operators.

Connectivity and remote work

Improving fast: fibre of 20 to 50 Mbps in Paje's nomad-oriented guesthouses and cafes, 4G from Vodacom and Airtel across the island, occasional power cuts. Small coworking spaces in Paje and Stone Town.

Paje has become a small but genuine remote-work base: beach, kite, cafes with fibre and a community of seasonal regulars. Power, bandwidth and the long rains are the limits; Stone Town adds culture but less infrastructure.

Long-stay visa
Tanzania e-visa; mandatory Zanzibar insurance; no nomad visa

Editorial assessment (October 2026).

Language

Swahili and English; a few Swahili phrases (jambo, asante, pole pole) are warmly received.

Cultural etiquette

A conservative Muslim island: cover shoulders and knees away from the beach, no public drinking outside tourist venues, discretion during Ramadan, ask before photographing people, and respect Stone Town's residents.

Insurance and health

Malaria prophylaxis is standard advice; clinics in Stone Town are basic, so evacuation cover to Dar es Salaam or Nairobi matters.

Visa information

Tanzania e-visa or visa on arrival (90 days; US citizens pay for a 12-month multiple-entry); Zanzibar's mandatory visitor insurance (since 2024) is bought online before arrival.
