Split
A Roman palace turned living city, with the islands of the Adriatic at the end of the pier.

Vue d'ensemble
Split grew inside the retirement palace of the emperor Diocletian, and 1,700 years later the palace is still the centre: cafes in the peristyle, apartments in the walls, the cathedral in his mausoleum. Around it is a confident Dalmatian port city of beaches, the Marjan hill forest, a ferry harbour that serves Hvar, Brac, Vis and Korcula, and a summer nomad and sailing scene that has made it the Adriatic's most popular base. Shoulder seasons are the secret; July and August belong to the crowds.
Pourquoi visiter
For Mediterranean island-hopping from a city that is itself a monument, and a Croatian nomad permit that lets you stay a year.
Détail du budget
Hostel beds 25 to 45 euros (double in August), rooms 60 to 120, one-bedroom apartments 800 to 1,100 euros a month from October to May and far more in summer. Burek 3 euros, a plate of grilled fish 15 to 25, a coffee 2, ferry to Hvar 10 to 20, Ultra Europe or a sailing week run to hundreds.
