Resumen

Split grew inside the retirement palace of the emperor Diocletian, and 1,700 years later the palace is still the centre: cafes in the peristyle, apartments in the walls, the cathedral in his mausoleum. Around it is a confident Dalmatian port city of beaches, the Marjan hill forest, a ferry harbour that serves Hvar, Brac, Vis and Korcula, and a summer nomad and sailing scene that has made it the Adriatic's most popular base. Shoulder seasons are the secret; July and August belong to the crowds.

Por qué visitarlo

For Mediterranean island-hopping from a city that is itself a monument, and a Croatian nomad permit that lets you stay a year.

Mochileros

The Adriatic's hostel hub for island hopping and sailing weeks; shoulder seasons halve the price.

Viajeros de año sabático

Seasonal hospitality and sailing-crew work for EU citizens; summer is a party, winter is dead.

Nómadas digitales

Year-long nomad permit, sun, sea, EU infrastructure and a summer community; quiet winters and summer rents are the trade.

Viajeros del mundo a largo plazo

The Dalmatian coast is a classic European leg, by bus and ferry to Montenegro and Albania.

Viajeros FIRE

Beautiful and affordable off-season; Croatia's residence options for retirees are limited compared with Portugal or Spain.

Viajeros en pausa profesional

Learn to sail, dive, kayak and swim the islands for a season.

Mochileros mayores

Flat old town, easy ferries, superb food; choose May, June or September for calm and warmth.

Práctico

Seguridad

Very safe. Sea urchins, sunburn and summer pickpockets in the palace; the bura wind cancels ferries.

Estafas frecuentes

Private-room touts at the bus station (fine, but inspect first), inflated summer taxi fares, and the occasional restaurant 'service' line.

Conectividad y trabajo remoto

Good fibre in apartments; coworking at Saltwater Nomads, Amosfera and a few cafes; strong 4G/5G across Dalmatia.

A sunny, connected, EU-legal base with a year-long nomad permit and a lively summer community; winters are quiet and some nomads rotate to Zagreb or warmer countries.
