Vue d'ensemble

Everyone comes for Angkor Wat, which deserves its reputation and three days of your life at least, but Siem Reap itself has grown into one of the region's more liveable small cities: a riverfront of cafes and galleries, a circus and arts scene born from the Khmer Rouge recovery, a cheap and improving food culture, and a dollarised economy that makes budgeting trivial. Many people who planned two nights stay two months.

Pourquoi visiter

For the greatest temple complex on earth and one of the cheapest comfortable long stays in Asia.

Météo et meilleure période pour visiter

Hot year-round. Cool and dry from November to February (highs around 31°C); very hot from March to May (38°C is common in April); rainy season June to October with the lushest temples, fewest tourists and the Tonle Sap at its fullest in October.

Meilleure période: November to February; the wet season is cheaper, greener and perfectly workable for temple days.

Où aller d'autre en Novembre →

Par style de voyage

Une base de données de destinations, sept vues. L'adéquation est un score éditorial sur cinq.

Routards

Three temple days plus Phare and the floating villages; one of the cheapest towns on the circuit, and Pub Street if you want it.

Voyageurs en année sabbatique

Reputable volunteering exists through established NGOs (check for child-protection policies); the town has a strong social-enterprise culture.

Nomades numériques

Cheap, calm and connected enough; a small community and a very long rainy season.

Voyageurs longue durée dans le monde

The hinge between Thailand and Vietnam overland, and Cambodia's quiet south coast is a bus away.

Voyageurs FIRE

Cambodia's retirement visa (ER) and low costs attract a steady community of early retirees, with Bangkok's hospitals a cheap flight away.

Voyageurs en pause carrière

Angkor photography, Khmer cooking, and meaningful volunteering with vetted organisations.

Voyageurs sac au dos expérimentés

Temple days are hot and long; a private tuk-tuk, early starts and a pool hotel for $30 make them comfortable. Beware the steep temple stairs.

Pratique

Sécurité

Safe town. Bag snatching from passing motorbikes on quiet roads at night; keep bags inside tuk-tuks. Land mines are a non-issue at the temples; stay on paths in remote rural areas.

Arnaques courantes

Children selling at temples (buying funds absence from school), 'milk for the baby' requests near Pub Street, orphanage visits (do not), fake monks, tuk-tuk drivers who 'lose' agreed prices. Use apps.

Connectivité et travail à distance

Good fibre in apartments and cafes (30 to 100 Mbps); a few small coworking spaces (AngkorHUB and cafe-based); 4G is reliable.

A low-cost, low-stress base with a long-established NGO and expat community; the E-visa extension route makes six-month stays simple. Internet is adequate for most remote work.

30-day VOA; E-visa extensions for long stays

Editorial assessment (October 2026).

Langue

Khmer; English widely spoken in tourism and by younger people.

Étiquette culturelle

Temple dress (shoulders and knees), no climbing on carvings, respect for monks, and sensitivity about the Khmer Rouge period, which touched every family here.

Assurance et santé

Royal Angkor International Hospital handles most issues; Bangkok for anything complex.
