Overview

Seoul moves fast: ten million people, a metro that puts most of the world to shame, cafes on every corner serving espresso and ambition, and a night economy that never properly closes. It is also a city of palaces, hanok villages and granite peaks you can hike before breakfast. For long stays it offers safety, speed and a Working Holiday scheme and workcation visa that make a legal year realistic; the costs sit between Southeast Asia and Tokyo.

Why visit

For a safe, electric, deeply modern city that is cheaper than Tokyo, easier than most of Asia for English speakers, and surrounded by national parks.

Weather and best time to visit

Four strong seasons: cold, dry winters (minus 10°C is normal, with yellow dust in spring), a short perfect spring (April to May, cherry blossom early April), a hot humid monsoon summer (July is the wettest month, August the hottest), and a crisp golden autumn from late September to November.

Best time: April to May and September to November.

Where to stay

Hongdae for nightlife and hostels, Itaewon and Haebangchon for the international crowd, Seongsu for cafes and studios, Mapo and Yeonnam for a local feel, Gangnam for business travellers. Goshiwon rooms are the cheapest legal monthly option in the city.

Neighbourhoods

Hongdae (students, nightlife), Yeonnam and Mangwon (cafes, local), Itaewon and Haebangchon (international), Seongsu (design), Jongno and Bukchon (palaces, hanok), Gangnam (corporate), Hannam (upscale).

Food

Gwangjang market for bindaetteok and mayak kimbap, Korean barbecue in Mapo, fried chicken and beer anywhere, naengmyeon in summer, tteokbokki from street carts, and a bakery and cafe culture that rivals Melbourne. Set lunches (baekban) are the value.

Getting around

The metro reaches everything; T-money on your phone pays for it, buses and taxis. AREX from Incheon in 43 minutes. KTX to Busan in 2 hours 30 minutes. Use Naver or Kakao maps; Google Maps is hobbled by law.

Things to do

Gyeongbokgung and Bukchon hanok villageHanbok rental gives free palace entry; go at opening.
Bukhansan national parkGranite peaks inside the city; Baegundae summit in half a day.
Hongdae and Yeonnam-dongStreet performers, cafes, the old railway park.

Seongsu-dongConverted warehouses, concept stores, the city's cafe laboratory.
Han river at nightConvenience-store ramyeon on the banks at Yeouido or Banpo.

By travel style

One destination database, seven views. Fit is an editorial score out of five.

Backpackers

Hostels in Hongdae, cheap and brilliant street food, free hiking: Seoul is mid-priced and high-value, with Busan and Jeju for the next leg.

Gap Year Travelers

The Working Holiday visa (US, UK, Canada, Australia, much of Europe) plus university language programmes make Korea one of the best gap-year countries in Asia.

Digital Nomads

World-leading internet and cafe culture, legal visa routes, moderate rents via goshiwon and officetels; winters are hard and the community is scattered.

Long-Term World Travelers

A rewarding fortnight; Korea is a peninsula with a closed border, so it is a flight in and out.

FIRE Travelers

Excellent healthcare and safety; costs are moderate but no retirement visa path exists.

Career Break Travelers

Korean language courses at Yonsei or Sogang (three-month terms), temple stays, taekwondo, and the national parks.

Older Backpackers

Safe, efficient and respectful of age; the metro's stairs and the hills demand some fitness. Spring and autumn are glorious.

Practical

Safety

Very safe at any hour. Air quality alerts in spring; monsoon flooding of low streets in July; crowd safety at festivals since Itaewon 2022 is taken seriously.

Common scams

Rare. Some Itaewon bars overcharge foreigners; a few taxis take long routes (use Kakao T).

Connectivity and remote work

The fastest average internet in the world; free Wi-Fi in metro and streets; coworking everywhere (FastFive, WeWork, SparkPlus) and cafes built for laptops.

A serious remote-work city for anyone whose clients are in Asia or who keeps odd hours: the internet, cafes and coworking are the world's best, officetels rent monthly, and the Working Holiday and Workcation visas offer legal paths.

Long-stay visa
90-day visa-free (check K-ETA); Working Holiday H-1; Workcation F-1-D for high earners

Editorial assessment (October 2026).

Language

Korean; hangul is learnable in a day and transforms the experience. English is decent among young people and in tourism; many apps require a Korean phone number.

Cultural etiquette

Two hands for giving and receiving, pour drinks for others, remove shoes indoors, respect for age is structural, no tipping, queue for everything, and keep the metro quiet.

Insurance and health

World-class hospitals (Severance, Asan, Samsung Medical Center) with international clinics; costs are moderate but insurance remains sensible.

Visa information

90 days visa-free for most Western passports (K-ETA requirements have been waived and reinstated more than once; check the official K-ETA site); Working Holiday (H-1) for eligible nationalities under 31; the Workcation visa (F-1-D) for high-earning remote workers.
