Overzicht

Porto is the city many Lisbon nomads moved to when the capital's rents doubled, and the city many travellers prefer anyway: a tumble of tiled houses down to the Douro, the port lodges of Gaia across the water, a food culture built on francesinhas and tripe, and the river valley's vineyards an hour upstream. It is wetter and cooler than Lisbon, more compact, and still feels like it belongs to the people who live there.

Milder and wetter than Lisbon: summers 24 to 26°C with Atlantic breezes, winters 13 to 14°C with heavy rain from October to March (Porto is one of Europe's rainier cities), and a greenness to show for it.
