Overview

Porto is the city many Lisbon nomads moved to when the capital's rents doubled, and the city many travellers prefer anyway: a tumble of tiled houses down to the Douro, the port lodges of Gaia across the water, a food culture built on francesinhas and tripe, and the river valley's vineyards an hour upstream. It is wetter and cooler than Lisbon, more compact, and still feels like it belongs to the people who live there.

Why visit

For Lisbon's charms at lower prices with more character per square metre, and the Douro valley on its doorstep.

By travel style

One destination database, seven views. Fit is an editorial score out of five.

Backpackers

Cheaper than Lisbon with equally good hostels; the Douro by train and the Camino Portugues north to Santiago start here.

Gap Year Travelers

A university city with language schools and a lively Erasmus scene.

Digital Nomads

The sensible choice for Portugal: cheaper, calmer, still connected and sociable.

Long-Term World Travelers

A satisfying week with the Douro; the Camino continues north.

FIRE Travelers

Lower costs than Lisbon, the same visa routes and healthcare, and a slower, friendlier city.

Career Break Travelers

Wine courses, the Camino, Portuguese lessons and the Atlantic coast.

Older Backpackers

Steep but compact, with the river, the lodges and the Douro train all manageable at an easy pace.

Practical

Safety

Very safe. Pickpockets around Ribeira and on the metro; steep wet cobbles.

Common scams

Few: the usual couvert charges and taxi detours.

Connectivity and remote work

Fibre as good as Lisbon's; coworking at Porto i/o, Selina, Typographia and many small spaces; a strong tech scene.

Lisbon's infrastructure at 70 percent of the price, a growing community, a calmer pace and the Douro for weekends. The winter rain is the only real argument against.
