Vue d'ensemble

Oaxaca is the Mexico that travellers fall for: a green-stone colonial centre, a Zapotec and Mixtec cultural heartland, the markets of 20 de Noviembre and Benito Juarez, seven moles, the mezcal villages of the valley, Monte Alban's mountaintop ruins and a Day of the Dead that is the most moving in the country. It is smaller, slower and cheaper than Mexico City, and the Pacific coast (Puerto Escondido, Mazunte) is a mountain road or a short flight away.

Pourquoi visiter

For the deepest indigenous culture and the best food in Mexico, in a walkable city with spring weather and a modest price tag.

Par style de voyage

Une base de données de destinations, sept vues. L'adéquation est un score éditorial sur cinq.

Routards

Cheap, safe and sociable hostels, markets for every meal, Monte Alban by colectivo and the coast beyond.

Voyageurs en année sabbatique

Spanish schools with homestays, volunteering in the villages and a cultural education in mole and mezcal.

Nomades numériques

US time zones, a strong long-stay community, cafes with fibre and a city that is easy to love; smaller coworking scene than the capital.

Voyageurs longue durée dans le monde

The classic stop between Mexico City and Chiapas or the coast on the way south.

Voyageurs FIRE

Mild climate, low costs, culture and a large expat and retiree community; healthcare is adequate locally and excellent in Mexico City.

Voyageurs en pause carrière

Spanish immersion, cooking classes in mole, weaving and natural dye workshops, mezcal study.

Voyageurs sac au dos expérimentés

Walkable, gentle, beautiful and safe, with good hotels from $50 and the valley by driver; a favourite of older travellers for decades.

Pratique

Sécurité

Oaxaca city is among Mexico's safest; teachers' protests and road blockades can disrupt travel (often around May and June); the mountain road to the coast has had robberies at night (travel by day or fly).

Arnaques courantes

Few; mezcal sold as 'artisanal' at tourist prices, and inflated Day of the Dead tour packages.

Connectivité et travail à distance

Fibre in most central apartments and cafes (50 to 150 Mbps); coworking at Convivio, Selina and a few cafes; 4G is reliable in the city, weaker in the valley.

A calmer nomad base than Mexico City with the same time zones, good cafe fibre and a strong community of long-stayers, artists and Spanish learners; the valley and the coast are the weekends.

Editorial assessment (October 2026).

Langue

Spanish, with Zapotec and Mixtec in the villages; English in tourism, otherwise limited: one of Mexico's best Spanish-school cities.

Étiquette culturelle

Ask before photographing people in markets and villages, buy crafts from makers, respect Day of the Dead as a family rite, and dress modestly in churches.

Assurance et santé

Decent private clinics; serious cases go to Mexico City or Puebla; insurance recommended.
