Resumen

Mexico City is the largest city in North America and, for the long-stay traveller, one of its richest: the Aztec and colonial centre, Roma and Condesa's art deco streets of cafes and galleries, Coyoacan's plazas, the canals of Xochimilco, the pyramids of Teotihuacan an hour away, museums by the hundred and a food culture that runs from tacos al pastor at midnight to the world's best restaurants. The nomad wave since 2020 has raised rents in Roma and Condesa; the city is enormous and the alternatives are many.

Por qué visitarlo

For a cultural density equal to any European capital at lower prices, spring weather most of the year and a 180-day tourist stamp.

Dónde alojarse

Roma Norte and Condesa for the cafe-and-coworking life, Juarez for a slightly cheaper, livelier version, Coyoacan for plazas and calm, Narvarte and Escandon for value with good taco economics, the Centro Historico for grandeur and noise, Polanco for money.

Barrios

Roma Norte and Condesa (cafes, nomads, art deco), Juarez (bars, slightly cheaper), Coyoacan (plazas, Frida), Centro (history, noise), Polanco (upscale, museums), Narvarte (tacos, value), San Rafael and Santa Maria la Ribera (up-and-coming), Escandon (quiet, central).

Comida

Tacos al pastor (El Vilsito, El Huequito), carnitas, tlacoyos from street griddles, mole in Coyoacan, chilaquiles for breakfast, the Mercado de San Juan and Medellin markets, pulque in a pulqueria, mezcal everywhere, and the fine-dining tier (Pujol, Quintonil) at prices that are a bargain by global standards.

Cómo moverse

Metro and Metrobus are cheap and extensive (crowded at rush hour; women-only cars exist), Ecobici bike share in the central neighbourhoods, Uber and DiDi for the rest, and ADO buses from TAPO and the northern terminal to the whole country. The altitude takes a day or two.

Qué hacer

Centro HistoricoThe Zocalo, the Templo Mayor, Diego Rivera's murals in the Palacio Nacional, the Palacio de Bellas Artes.
TeotihuacanThe Pyramids of the Sun and Moon; go early by bus from the northern terminal.
Museo Nacional de AntropologiaOne of the world's great museums; half a day minimum.
Coyoacan and the Frida Kahlo museumBook Casa Azul weeks ahead; the market and plazas need no ticket.
XochimilcoTrajinera boats on the Aztec canals; go with a group on a weekday.
Lucha libre at Arena MexicoTuesday and Friday nights.
Roma and CondesaParque Mexico, the cafes, the galleries, the taco stands.
Day trips to Tepoztlan, Puebla or CholulaMountain-village markets; colonial grandeur; the largest pyramid by volume.

Por estilo de viaje

Una base de datos de destinos, siete vistas. La puntuación de compatibilidad es editorial, sobre cinco.

Mochileros

Hostels in Roma and the Centro, tacos for a dollar, free museums on Sundays and buses to Oaxaca, Puebla and the coast.

Viajeros de año sabático

Spanish immersion at its best, with language schools, volunteering and the whole of Mexico and Central America south of it.

Nómadas digitales

US time zones, fibre, coworking, culture and a huge community; rents in Roma and Condesa have doubled, so look two neighbourhoods out.

Viajeros del mundo a largo plazo

The northern anchor of the Central and South American overland route, with ADO buses in every direction.

Viajeros FIRE

Excellent private healthcare, culture, a long tourist stamp and the Temporary Resident route; Mexico is the Americas' leading retirement destination for good reason.

Viajeros en pausa profesional

Spanish, cooking (mole, mezcal), art history and the pyramids: a sabbatical city of the first rank.

Mochileros mayores

Altitude, traffic and crowds take adjusting; Coyoacan or Condesa hotels, Uber and a slow pace make the museums and markets a joy.

Práctico

Seguridad

Central neighbourhoods are as safe as most big cities by day; phone theft on crowded transit, express kidnapping via street-hailed taxis (use apps only) and drink-spiking are the risks; avoid Tepito and Doctores at night; earthquakes and the altitude are the natural factors.

Estafas frecuentes

Taxi meter and route tricks (never hail on the street), fake police 'fines', ATM skimming (use bank-branch machines), market pickpockets, and restaurant 'service' additions in tourist areas.

Conectividad y trabajo remoto

Good fibre in Roma, Condesa and Polanco (100 to 500 Mbps), patchier elsewhere; coworking everywhere (WeWork, Impact Hub, Publico, Homework and small spaces); strong 4G/5G from Telcel.

One of the Americas' great nomad cities: same time zones as the US, cheap fibre apartments, a vast creative community and a 180-day stamp; Roma and Condesa's prices and the altitude are the only arguments against.

Visado de larga estancia
FMM up to 180 days; Temporary Resident visa for longer

Editorial assessment (October 2026).

Idioma

Spanish; English common in Roma, Condesa and Polanco, limited elsewhere; the city is a superb place to learn Spanish.

Etiqueta cultural

Greet with buenos dias, tip 10 to 15 percent, bargain gently in markets, dress smarter than you would in Southeast Asia, respect Day of the Dead as a family occasion, and do not discuss cartels with strangers.

Seguro y salud

Excellent private hospitals (ABC, Medica Sur, Angeles); pharmacies with consulting doctors handle small things for a few dollars; insurance recommended for the big ones.

Información sobre visas

Up to 180 days on the FMM for most Western passports, at the officer's discretion; the Temporary Resident visa (applied for at a consulate abroad with income or savings proof) is the route for stays beyond six months.
