Vue d'ensemble

Lisbon became the reference European nomad city in the late 2010s and has paid the price in rents, but the reasons remain: 300 days of sun, a walkable centre of tiled facades and miradouros, surf beaches thirty minutes away by train, a D8 visa that actually works and a city that is still, by Western European standards, cheap to eat and drink in. The nomad crowd has pushed out to Cascais, Ericeira and the Alentejo; the city they leave behind is the better for a longer, slower look.

Pourquoi visiter

For the easiest soft landing in Europe for a remote worker, a capital with beaches, and the gateway to Portugal's underrated interior and the Azores and Madeira.

Où aller d'autre en Avril →

Où séjourner

Alfama and Mouraria for atmosphere and stairs, Baixa and Chiado for the centre (noisy, pricey), Arroios and Anjos for the nomad apartments and brunch, Campo de Ourique and Estrela for a village feel, Cais do Sodré and Santos for nightlife, Cascais and Ericeira for the beach-based alternative.

Quartiers

Alfama and Graça (old town), Baixa and Chiado (centre), Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré (nightlife), Principe Real (design, cafes), Arroios and Anjos (nomads, multicultural), Campo de Ourique (local, families), Belem (museums), Parque das Nações (modern, waterfront).

Nourriture

Grilled sardines in summer, bacalhau in 365 ways, bifana sandwiches, the Time Out market (touristy but good), tascas serving prato do dia, pasteis de nata from Manteigaria or the original in Belem, and petiscos with vinho verde in Bairro Alto. Lunch is the budget meal; dinner starts after 9.

Se déplacer

Metro, trams (28 is a museum piece; avoid in rush hour) and buses on the Navegante card; trains to Cascais from Cais do Sodré and to Sintra from Rossio; Uber and Bolt; e-scooters everywhere. Porto is 3 hours by train.

Activités

Alfama and the miradourosSanta Luzia and Graça viewpoints at sunset; fado in a small house, not a dinner show.
BelemThe Jeronimos monastery, the Tower, the MAAT museum and the original pasteis de nata.
LX Factory and AlcantaraConverted industrial quarter under the bridge.
SintraPena palace and the Moorish castle; go on a weekday at opening.
Cascais to GuinchoCoastal cycle path to a wild surf beach.
Surf at Carcavelos or EriceiraLessons from 30 euros; Ericeira is a World Surfing Reserve.
Feira da LadraTuesday and Saturday flea market behind the Pantheon.
Day trips to Setubal and ArrabidaDolphins, cliffs and the best beaches near the capital.

Par style de voyage

Une base de données de destinations, sept vues. L'adéquation est un score éditorial sur cinq.

Routards

Great hostels (some of Europe's best-rated), cheap lunches and wine, free miradouros and beaches by train; the dorm bed is the expensive part.

Voyageurs en année sabbatique

Portuguese language schools, surf-camp work on the coast and a huge international student scene; EU citizens can work freely.

Nomades numériques

The benchmark European nomad city: D8 visa, fibre, coworking, community, surf; rent is the price of entry.

Voyageurs longue durée dans le monde

Western Europe's cheapest capital and the departure point for Madeira, the Azores and Morocco.

Voyageurs FIRE

The D7 visa was built for exactly this profile; private healthcare is excellent and NHR-style tax regimes have changed, so take current advice.

Voyageurs en pause carrière

Surf, Portuguese, cooking, sailing and the Camino Portugues from the cathedral door: a sabbatical with structure.

Voyageurs sac au dos expérimentés

Hills and cobbles need good shoes and a tolerance for stairs; the trams, funiculars and a central hotel solve most of it, and the food, light and safety are rewards.

Pratique

Sécurité

Very safe. Pickpockets on tram 28, the metro and in Baixa; the 'drug sellers' on Rua Augusta sell oregano; steep cobbles are slippery when wet.

Arnaques courantes

Restaurant 'couvert' (bread and olives) charged if touched, inflated tuk-tuk prices, taxi detours from the airport (use apps or the Aerobus), and overpriced fado dinner packages.

Connectivité et travail à distance

Excellent fibre (200 to 1,000 Mbps) in almost all apartments; coworking everywhere (Second Home, Heden, Outsite, Selina, LACS, plus dozens of small spaces) from 15 euros a day.

The complete package: visa route, fibre, coworking, community, English, a European time zone with Americas overlap in the afternoon, and surf. Housing is the constraint; many remote workers now base in Porto, Madeira or the coast instead.

Visa longue durée
Schengen 90/180; D8 digital nomad visa; D7 passive income

Editorial assessment (October 2026).

Langue

Portuguese; English is widely spoken, especially by anyone under 40; Spanish is understood but not always welcomed.

Étiquette culturelle

Greet with bom dia, say thank you (obrigado/obrigada by speaker's gender), do not compare Portugal to Spain, dress is relaxed, dinner is late, tipping is modest and welcome.

Assurance et santé

Excellent public (SNS) and private hospitals (CUF, Luz); private travel insurance for non-EU visitors.

Informations sur les visas

Schengen 90/180 for most non-EU visitors; the D8 digital nomad visa (income roughly four times the minimum wage) and the D7 passive-income visa are the long-stay routes; both are applied for from abroad and lead to residence.
