Panoramica

Lima is the city travellers used to skip on the way to Cusco and now plan trips around: a food scene that has put Peruvian cooking on the world's map, from ceviche counters to the restaurants on every global list, a cliff-top district (Miraflores and Barranco) above the surf, pre-Inca pyramids inside the city, a colonial centre of carved balconies, and a grey winter sky (the garua) that locals apologise for and visitors barely notice. Prices are moderate; the Pacific swell is year-round.

Perché visitare

For the best eating in the Americas, surf in the city, and the gateway to Peru's mountains, desert and jungle.

Clima e periodo migliore per visitare

A desert coast with almost no rain: summer (December to April) is sunny and humid with highs of 26 to 28°C; winter (June to October) is grey, damp and cool (18 to 19°C) under the garua fog, though it never really rains. The surf is year-round.

Periodo migliore: December to April for sun; the grey months are fine for food and city life and cheaper.

Per stile di viaggio

Un unico database di destinazioni, sette visualizzazioni. La compatibilità è un punteggio editoriale su cinque.

Backpacker

A few days of ceviche and surf before the Andes; Miraflores hostels are good, the Centro's cheaper.

Viaggiatori in gap year

Spanish schools, surf camps and volunteering through established organisations; a good Peru base.

Digital Nomad

Fast fibre on the cliffs, US time zones, moderate prices and a food scene that makes every lunch an event.

Viaggiatori nel mondo a lungo termine

The hub of the Andean route: Cusco, Arequipa, Huaraz, the Amazon and the Bolivian border all run from here.

Viaggiatori FIRE

Good private healthcare and a sophisticated city at moderate cost; Peru's rentista visa exists but is little used; the grey winter deters some.

Viaggiatori in pausa dalla carriera

Cooking school, surf, Spanish, and the Inca Trail as the capstone.

Backpacker con più esperienza

Miraflores is flat, safe and comfortable, with excellent hotels and restaurants; the altitude questions come later, in Cusco.

Pratico

Sicurezza

Miraflores, Barranco and San Isidro are safe by day and reasonably at night; phone and bag theft, express kidnapping in unlicensed taxis (apps only), and protests downtown are the risks; avoid Callao and the outer districts.

Truffe comuni

Counterfeit soles in change, taxi overcharging and routes, ATM skimming, pickpockets on the Metropolitano, and 'closed' attractions.

Connettività e lavoro da remoto

Good fibre in Miraflores, Barranco and San Isidro (50 to 200 Mbps); coworking at Comunal, WeWork, Selina and many cafes; Claro and Movistar 4G are fine.

A liveable, well-connected base on US Eastern time with fast fibre in the coastal districts and a growing community; the grey winter and the lack of a nomad visa are the limits, and the food is the daily reward.

Visto per soggiorni prolungati
90 days visa-free (up to 183 a year); no nomad visa yet

Editorial assessment (October 2026).

Lingua

Spanish; English in tourism and business; Lima's Spanish is clear and a good place to learn.

Galateo culturale

Greet with a kiss on the cheek among friends, tip 10 percent, dress a little smarter than beach, do not discuss politics or terrorism of the 1980s lightly, and never rush a meal.

Assicurazione e salute

Good private clinics (Anglo Americana, Ricardo Palma, San Pablo); insurance recommended; altitude cover for the Andes if continuing.

Informazioni sul visto

Up to 90 days visa-free for most Western passports (extendable at the officer's discretion to 183 a year); no nomad visa in operation yet.
