Overview

Las Palmas has the best climate of any city in Europe, a three-kilometre urban beach (Las Canteras) with a reef that keeps it calm, a surf break at the end of it, and a remote-work community that fills the apartments behind the sand every winter. Gran Canaria's interior is a different island of volcanic peaks, pine forests and dunes; the whole thing is Spain, EU and Schengen, with Canary tax quirks and cheap flights to the mainland.

Why visit

For a legal, warm, affordable European winter by the sea with everything a nomad needs and almost none of the hype.

Weather and best time to visit

The 'eternal spring' is real: highs of 21 to 22°C in January and 27 to 28°C in August, little rain (a few wet days from November to February), and a cloud cap (panza de burro) that can sit over the north coast in summer. The south of the island is hotter and sunnier.

Best time: Any month; October to April is when the northern winter makes it unbeatable.

Where to stay

Las Canteras and Guanarteme for the beach and the nomad apartments, Vegueta and Triana for the historic centre, Santa Catalina for the port and buses, Arenales and Alcaravaneras for cheaper rooms a short walk from both.

By travel style

One destination database, seven views. Fit is an editorial score out of five.

Backpackers

A beach-and-surf winter at Spanish prices; hostels are decent and the interior hiking is free.

Gap Year Travelers

Surf-school and hostel work for EU citizens, Spanish courses, and a safe, sunny base.

Digital Nomads

Europe's winter answer: warm, cheap, legal, connected and sociable, with a beach commute.

Long-Term World Travelers

An island detour rather than a route; ferries and cheap flights to Morocco and the mainland.

FIRE Travelers

The climate, Spanish healthcare and the non-lucrative visa make the Canaries a long-standing retirement destination.

Career Break Travelers

Surf, dive, hike the caldera, learn Spanish, and reset in a place that never gets cold.

Older Backpackers

Flat promenade, mild weather, excellent healthcare and easy buses: one of the gentlest long stays in Europe.

Practical

Safety

Very safe. Petty theft on the beach and in Santa Catalina park at night; the Atlantic's currents at La Cicer.

Common scams

Very few. Electronics shops in Santa Catalina selling grey-import goods at 'duty-free' prices.

Connectivity and remote work

Fibre across the city; coworking at Coworking C, Soppa de Azul, The House and many cafes on the beachfront; a dedicated nomad community (Nomad City conference started here).

Arguably Europe's best winter nomad city: warm, cheap, EU-legal, with a beach to walk to and a decade-old community. The summer is quieter and the island interior is the weekend.
