Kuala Lumpur gets skipped on the backpacker trail and that is the opportunity. English is near-universal, the metro and trains work, condominiums with pools and gyms rent for a third of Singapore's prices, the food is a three-way fusion of Malay, Chinese and Indian cooking, and the 90-day visa-free entry for many passports is among the most generous in the region. The Petronas Towers are the postcard; the Batu Caves, the Chinatown kopitiams, Bangsar's cafes and the hill stations an hour away are the life.

Equatorial: 32 to 34°C every day of the year with high humidity and afternoon thunderstorms. The wettest months are March to May and October to December; June to August is slightly drier. There is no bad month, only wetter ones.

LRT, MRT and monorail cover most of the city; KLIA Ekspres to the airport in 28 minutes; Grab for the rest. ETS trains to Ipoh and Penang, buses to everywhere, and the cheapest regional flights in Asia.

Among the best in Asia: fibre of 100 to 500 Mbps is standard in condos; coworking at Common Ground, WORQ, Colony and dozens more from 40 ringgit a day.
Quietly one of the best nomad cities in the world: fast fibre, English, cheap condos with pools, the DE Rantau pass, excellent hospitals and a hub airport. The community is smaller and more professional than Bali's or Chiang Mai's.

Malay is official; English is spoken fluently by most people in the city; Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien and Tamil are everywhere.

A Muslim-majority country: dress modestly outside tourist zones and at mosques, no public drinking outside licensed venues, be discreet during Ramadan daylight hours. Remove shoes indoors.
