Overview

Kathmandu is where trekkers assemble: Thamel's gear shops and bakeries, the permit offices, the guesthouses that have hosted expeditions since the 1960s. Around that is a valley of medieval cities (Patan, Bhaktapur, the old town around Durbar Square), living Hindu and Buddhist shrines (Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, Swayambhunath), terrible air in winter and some of the warmest people on the continent. The Annapurna and Everest regions, Langtang, Chitwan and Pokhara all start from here.

Why visit

For the Himalaya at tea-house prices, a 90-day visa on arrival, and a cultural density that makes the valley worth a week on its own.

Weather and best time to visit

Spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November) are the trekking seasons with clear skies; the monsoon (June to September) brings daily rain, landslides and leeches; winter (December to February) is dry, sunny by day, near freezing at night, with the valley's worst air pollution.

Best time: October to November and March to April.

Where to stay

Thamel for gear, cafes and trekking agencies; Lazimpat and Jhamsikhel (Patan) for a quieter expat scene and better cafes; Boudha for the Tibetan community and monastery guesthouses; Bhaktapur for a night in a medieval square.

Neighbourhoods

Thamel (tourist hub), Lazimpat (embassies, cafes), Jhamsikhel and Sanepa in Patan (expat restaurants, coworking), Boudha (Tibetan quarter), the old town around Asan and Indra Chowk (markets).

Food

Dal bhat (refills included), momos (steamed, fried, in soup), Newari food in Patan and Kirtipur (chatamari, choila), Tibetan thukpa and thenthuk in Boudha, and a surprisingly serious cafe and bakery scene left by decades of climbers.

Getting around

Pathao and inDrive for rides, taxis (negotiate), tourist buses to Pokhara (7 to 9 hours) and Chitwan, flights to Lukla and Pokhara (weather-dependent), and a new Chinese-built ring road that has not solved the traffic.

Things to do

Boudhanath stupa at duskCircle clockwise with the pilgrims; rooftop cafes face the dome.
Patan Durbar Square and the museumThe finest Newari architecture in the valley.
BhaktapurA medieval city 13 km east; stay overnight.
SwayambhunathThe Monkey Temple's 365 steps and the valley view.
PashupatinathNepal's holiest Hindu site and its cremation ghats; respectful distance.
Trek preparationPermits at the Tourism Board (TIMS, national park fees); gear rental in Thamel.
Nagarkot or Chisapani for Himalayan viewsAn overnight on the valley rim for a sunrise panorama.
Everest mountain flightAn hour along the range for those not trekking.

By travel style

One destination database, seven views. Fit is an editorial score out of five.

Backpackers

The cheapest serious adventure on earth: three weeks on the Annapurna Circuit costs less than a week in Europe, and Thamel's hostels are where the groups form.

Gap Year Travelers

Trekking, volunteering with established NGOs (vet them for child protection), and a 150-day annual visa allowance.

Digital Nomads

Power and bandwidth have improved but remain unreliable; fine between treks, not as a base.

Long-Term World Travelers

The Himalayan chapter of a long route, with overland links to India (Sunauli, Kakarbhitta) and, when open, Tibet.

FIRE Travelers

Very cheap but healthcare, air quality and infrastructure make it a seasonal visit rather than a base.

Career Break Travelers

A trek, a meditation course at Kopan monastery, a volunteering placement: three months here changes people.

Older Backpackers

Tea-house trekking is open to fit travellers of any age with porters and a slow ascent profile; Patan's boutique hotels make the valley comfortable.

Practical

Safety

Low crime. The hazards are altitude on treks, road accidents, the monsoon's landslides and winter air pollution (bring a good mask). Political strikes (bandhs) occasionally stop transport.

Common scams

Fake trekking agencies and guides (check Trekking Agencies' Association registration), 'milk for the baby' scams, fake sadhus demanding photo payment, and gem and carpet shop commissions. Budget flights that 'disappear' through agents; book directly.

Connectivity and remote work

Improved but inconsistent: 20 to 50 Mbps in better hotels and cafes, power still occasionally cut, 4G from Ncell and NTC good in the valley. A few coworking spaces in Jhamsikhel and Lazimpat.

Not a nomad city in any conventional sense (internet, air and power see to that), but a cheap, warm base used by writers, NGO workers and trekkers between routes, with 90-day visas and a culture of long stays.

VOA up to 90 days, extendable to 150 a year

Editorial assessment (October 2026).

Language

Nepali; English widely spoken in Thamel, trekking and among the educated; Newari and Tibetan in their communities.

Cultural etiquette

Shoes off in temples and homes, circle stupas and mani walls clockwise, no leather in some Hindu temples, right hand for giving, modest dress, ask before photographing people and never at cremations.

Insurance and health

Essential, and it must explicitly cover trekking to your maximum altitude and helicopter evacuation; CIWEC Hospital in Lazimpat is the travellers' clinic.

Visa information

Visa on arrival for almost all nationalities (15, 30 or 90 days; cash USD); extendable to 150 days a year at the Department of Immigration.
