Visão geral

Istanbul has been a capital of empires for 1,600 years and still behaves like the centre of the world: the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque in Sultanahmet, the Grand Bazaar's covered kilometres, Beyoglu's nineteenth-century avenues, Kadikoy's Asian-side food streets, and the Bosphorus running through all of it with ferries that are the best public transport experience on earth. The lira's collapse made it cheap in dollars; the city's energy makes it addictive.

Por que visitar

For a world city with Mediterranean food, Islamic and Byzantine history, a huge creative scene and prices that currently favour hard-currency earners.

Onde ficar

Sultanahmet for the monuments (tourist bubble), Beyoglu's Cihangir and Galata for cafes and apartments, Besiktas for students and nightlife, Kadikoy and Moda on the Asian side for the best neighbourhood life and nomads, Balat and Fener for old Greek and Jewish quarters.

Bairros

Sultanahmet (monuments), Beyoglu (Cihangir, Galata, Karakoy: cafes, galleries), Besiktas (students, nightlife, ferries), Kadikoy and Moda (Asian side, nomads, food), Balat and Fener (old quarters), Nisantasi (upscale), Uskudar (conservative, Bosphorus views).

Alimentação

Balik ekmek (fish sandwich) at Eminonu, lahmacun and pide, kebabs by region (Adana, Urfa), meze at a meyhane with raki, menemen for breakfast, Turkish breakfast spreads in Besiktas, borek, baklava from Karakoy Gulluoglu, Kadikoy's market street (Ciya Sofrasi), and tea, endlessly.

Como circular

Metro, tram, Marmaray (under the Bosphorus), ferries and buses on the Istanbulkart; the new airport is far (metro and Havaist buses), Sabiha Gokcen is closer to the Asian side; BiTaksi for taxis; intercity buses from Esenler and high-speed trains to Ankara.

O que fazer

Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and TopkapiSultanahmet's core; go at opening, dress modestly.
Bosphorus ferry to Anadolu KavagiThe full-length public ferry is the best day out for a few lira.
Grand Bazaar and the Spice BazaarThen the quieter hans behind them.
Kadikoy and ModaFood market, street art, the Moda seafront at sunset.

Por estilo de viagem

Uma base de dados de destinos, sete visualizações. O encaixe é uma pontuação editorial de um a cinco.

Mochileiros

Cheap in dollars, endlessly interesting, with hostels in Beyoglu and Kadikoy and buses to Cappadocia, the coast and Georgia.

Viajantes em Gap Year

Turkish courses, TEFL (with a degree) and a vast city to learn; the visa limit shapes the stay.

Nómadas Digitais

Big-city infrastructure, cheap apartments in Kadikoy, a real community; the 90-day rule and permit difficulties are the limits.

Viajantes de Longa Duração pelo Mundo

The hinge of Europe and Asia: buses to the Balkans and the Caucasus, ferries to the islands, trains east, flights everywhere.

Viajantes FIRE

Low costs and excellent private hospitals, offset by residence-permit difficulty and inflation; many split time with Greece or Georgia.

Viajantes em Pausa na Carreira

Turkish, Ottoman history, cooking, the hammam, Cappadocia and the Lycian Way: a sabbatical with density.

Mochileiros mais velhos

Hills, crowds and traffic need pacing; the ferries, a good hotel in Cihangir or Sultanahmet and a guide for the big sites make it manageable and magnificent.

Prático

Segurança

Low street crime for its size; pickpockets in Sultanahmet and on the tram; nightlife scams in Taksim; demonstrations around Taksim and Besiktas are policed heavily. Earthquake risk is real and the city's building stock is uneven.

Esquemas mais comuns

Shoe-shiners who 'drop' a brush, carpet-shop tea invitations that last hours, Taksim bars with enormous drink bills (never follow a friendly stranger), taxi detours and meter tricks (BiTaksi or Uber), and counterfeit goods sold as real.

Conectividade e trabalho remoto

Fibre in most apartments (50 to 200 Mbps), good 4G/5G; coworking at Kolektif House, Workinton, Impact Hub and dozens of cafes; a large expat and nomad community on the Asian side.

A huge, cheap, culturally rich city with growing coworking and a strong Asian-side community; the obstacles are the 90-day limit, the difficulty of residence permits since 2022, and inflation's unpredictability.

Visto de longa duração
90/180 visa-free for most Western passports (AU e-Visa); residence permits now difficult

Editorial assessment (October 2026).

Idioma

Turkish; English common in tourism and among the young; a few phrases open doors.

Etiqueta cultural

Mosque dress and shoes off, no photos of people praying, tea is hospitality not a sales pitch (though sometimes it is), respect during Ramadan, and avoid political arguments about the government.

Seguro e saúde

Private hospitals (Acibadem, American Hospital, Memorial) are excellent; public ones are crowded; insurance is required for residence permits and sensible for all.

Informações sobre vistos

90 days in 180 visa-free for many Western passports (US and Canada since 2024; the UK and EU longer); Australians need an e-Visa; residence permits for tourism purposes have become hard to obtain in central districts.
