Panoramica

Hoi An's old town is a preserved trading port of Chinese assembly halls, Japanese bridges and yellow-washed merchant houses strung with silk lanterns, and it has become one of Vietnam's most visited places for good reason. Step a kilometre outside it and the town turns into rice fields, water-buffalo lanes and An Bang beach, where a quieter long-stay community lives among the homestays. The tailoring trade is real, the cooking classes are the country's best and the food is distinct even by Vietnamese standards.

Perché visitare

For the most beautiful small town in Vietnam and a surprisingly good base: beach, paddies and old town within one bicycle ride.

Clima e periodo migliore per visitare

The same pattern as Da Nang: dry and hot February to August, with the best balance from February to April; heavy rain and regular flooding of the old town from October to December (the streets flood most years in October and November).

Periodo migliore: February to April; May to August for beach weather if you can take the heat.

Dove alloggiare

Homestays in Cam Chau and Cam Thanh among the paddies are the sweet spot; An Bang beach for the long-stay crowd; the old town itself is pretty but noisy and pricier.

Quartieri

Old town (sights, noise), Cam Chau and Cam Thanh (paddies and homestays), An Bang (beach, long stays), Cam Nam island (quiet, local).

Cibo

Cao lau (noodles made with water from a specific well, the legend says), white rose dumplings, com ga (chicken rice), Banh Mi Phuong and Madam Khanh's banh mi, and the central market's stalls. Cooking classes with a market tour and basket-boat ride are a staple.

Come spostarsi

Bicycle for everything within 5 km; Grab for Da Nang airport (45 minutes); the Hoi An to Da Nang shuttle bus; scooters for My Son and the coast.

Cosa fare

Old town after darkLanterns, the Japanese Covered Bridge and the Thu Bon river boats; buy the entrance ticket that funds restoration.
An Bang beachA proper beach 4 km away with a relaxed cafe strip.
Tra Que vegetable villageFarming demonstrations and cooking classes among the herb beds.
Cycling the paddiesCam Thanh's coconut-palm waterways and basket boats.
TailoringTwo or three fittings over 48 hours; bring reference photos and check reviews.
My Son sanctuaryCham ruins at dawn before the heat and groups.
Cham IslandsSnorkelling and homestays, March to September only.
Full-moon lantern festivalMonthly; electric lights off in the old town.

Per stile di viaggio

Un unico database di destinazioni, sette visualizzazioni. La compatibilità è un punteggio editoriale su cinque.

Backpacker

Three nights is the norm: old town, beach, cooking class, a tailored shirt, then the sleeper bus south.

Viaggiatori in gap year

Lovely and cheap; limited work options beyond hospitality volunteering.

Digital Nomad

Peaceful and connected enough for most work; small community, few meetups, Da Nang next door for the rest.

Viaggiatori nel mondo a lungo termine

The natural pause on the coast road between Hue and the south.

Viaggiatori FIRE

Comfortable homestays for $30, a growing retiree community at An Bang, excellent food; the autumn floods are the caveat.

Viaggiatori in pausa dalla carriera

Cooking, lantern-making, tailoring and farming workshops; a gentle place to think.

Backpacker con più esperienza

Flat, bicycle-friendly, beautiful and safe, with boutique homestays and good food at every price: a standout for older travellers.

Pratico

Sicurezza

Very safe. Bicycle theft and the odd bag snatch on quiet lanes at night; flooding in autumn is the main disruption.

Truffe comuni

Tailor touts and commission-based 'recommendations', boat-ride overcharging on the river, inflated entrance ticket resale. Agree prices first.

Connettività e lavoro da remoto

Good fibre in homestays and the An Bang cafes; coworking is cafe-based (Hub Hoi An, Hoi An Coworking) rather than large spaces.

A slower nomad life than Da Nang, an hour away: paddies, beach and cafes with fibre. Many remote workers split time between the two.

90-day e-visa; no nomad visa

Editorial assessment (October 2026).

Lingua

Vietnamese; English fluent across the tourist economy.

Galateo culturale

The old town is a living neighbourhood: keep voices down at night, dress modestly at the assembly halls, and support shops rather than photographing them.

Assicurazione e salute

Hoi An has clinics; Da Nang's hospitals are 45 minutes away for anything serious.
