Vue d'ensemble

Officially Ho Chi Minh City, still Saigon to almost everyone who lives there, Vietnam's southern metropolis runs on commerce, coffee and motorbikes. District 1 holds the French colonial landmarks and the war museums; District 3's tree-lined streets hide the cafes; Thao Dien across the river is where the expat and nomad population settles into villas and towers. It is hotter, louder and more ambitious than Hanoi, and its food scene, from banh mi carts to the rooftop restaurants of Nguyen Hue, is a serious rival.

Pourquoi visiter

For energy and opportunity: Vietnam's business capital has the best job market for English teachers and remote-work infrastructure in the country, plus the Mekong Delta and the southern beaches on its doorstep.

Où aller d'autre en Décembre →

Où séjourner

Pham Ngu Lao and Bui Vien (backpacker district, noisy), District 3 (cafes, local life), Thao Dien in Thu Duc City (expats and nomads, international schools), Binh Thanh (cheap monthly rooms on the edge of the centre).

Quartiers

District 1 (centre, backpackers, business), District 3 (cafes, villas), Thao Dien (expats, nomads, families), Binh Thanh (budget monthly rentals), District 7 (planned, quiet, international schools), Cholon (Chinatown).

Nourriture

Com tam (broken rice) for breakfast, banh mi from Huynh Hoa, bun thit nuong, hu tieu, snails on Vinh Khanh street, and a cafe on every corner serving ca phe sua da. The Ben Thanh street-food market is tourist-priced; the lanes behind it are not.

Se déplacer

Grab bikes rule; the first metro line (Ben Thanh to Suoi Tien) opened in December 2024; buses are cheap and air-conditioned. Trains north and buses to the Mekong and Cambodia (Phnom Penh is 6 to 7 hours).

Activités

War Remnants MuseumHarrowing and essential.
Cu Chi tunnelsHalf-day trip; the Ben Duoc section is quieter than Ben Dinh.
District 1 colonial coreNotre-Dame, the Central Post Office, the Opera House and the Reunification Palace.
Cholon (District 5)Chinatown's temples and the Binh Tay market.
Mekong DeltaDay trips are rushed; stay a night in Can Tho for the floating market at dawn.

Vung Tau or Mui NeNearest beaches, 2 to 4 hours.

Par style de voyage

Une base de données de destinations, sept vues. L'adéquation est un score éditorial sur cinq.

Routards

The southern end of the trail and the jumping-off point for the Mekong and Cambodia; Bui Vien is loud, District 3 is better.

Voyageurs en année sabbatique

The best city in Vietnam to find English-teaching work and the start-up internships that go with a boom town.

Nomades numériques

Big-city infrastructure, cheap rents by nomad-hub standards and a sociable Thao Dien scene; heat and traffic are the price.

Voyageurs longue durée dans le monde

Gateway south to the Delta, west to Cambodia and the ferry to Phu Quoc; flights are cheap everywhere.

Voyageurs FIRE

Low costs and good private hospitals, offset by no long-stay visa route, heat, noise and air quality.

Voyageurs en pause carrière

Vietnamese language courses, cooking schools and volunteering with social enterprises; a city that rewards curiosity.

Voyageurs sac au dos expérimentés

The traffic and heat are hard work; the museums, District 1 hotels and a Mekong cruise make a comfortable short stay.

Pratique

Sécurité

Generally safe; phone and bag snatching from motorbikes is the real risk, especially in Districts 1 and 3. Keep phones off the kerb side. Bui Vien at night has drink-spiking and pickpocket problems.

Arnaques courantes

Cyclo and motorbike-taxi overcharging (use Grab), rigged taxi meters (Vinasun and Mai Linh are reliable), coconut-seller photo set-ups, and shoe-cleaning 'repairs'.

Connectivité et travail à distance

Fast fibre and 5G; coworking at Dreamplex, Toong, Circo, WeWork and the cafes of Thao Dien and District 3.

Vietnam's start-up and remote-work capital with the largest coworking scene in the country and a big expat population in Thao Dien. English teaching pays well by local standards; nomads value the visa simplicity and the cost.

Visa longue durée
90-day e-visa; no nomad visa

Editorial assessment (October 2026).

Langue

Vietnamese (southern dialect); English common in business, hospitality and among young people.

Étiquette culturelle

Tet is sacred: prices rise and shops close for a week. Dress modestly at temples and the palace; keep war-era politics respectful.

Assurance et santé

FV Hospital, Family Medical Practice and Vinmec Central Park are good; Singapore or Bangkok for complex care.

Informations sur les visas

90-day e-visa; business visas are the route for those teaching or working locally.
