Resumen

Officially Ho Chi Minh City, still Saigon to almost everyone who lives there, Vietnam's southern metropolis runs on commerce, coffee and motorbikes. District 1 holds the French colonial landmarks and the war museums; District 3's tree-lined streets hide the cafes; Thao Dien across the river is where the expat and nomad population settles into villas and towers. It is hotter, louder and more ambitious than Hanoi, and its food scene, from banh mi carts to the rooftop restaurants of Nguyen Hue, is a serious rival.

Por qué visitarlo

For energy and opportunity: Vietnam's business capital has the best job market for English teachers and remote-work infrastructure in the country, plus the Mekong Delta and the southern beaches on its doorstep.

Comida

Com tam (broken rice) for breakfast, banh mi from Huynh Hoa, bun thit nuong, hu tieu, snails on Vinh Khanh street, and a cafe on every corner serving ca phe sua da. The Ben Thanh street-food market is tourist-priced; the lanes behind it are not.

Por estilo de viaje

Una base de datos de destinos, siete vistas. La puntuación de compatibilidad es editorial, sobre cinco.

Mochileros

The southern end of the trail and the jumping-off point for the Mekong and Cambodia; Bui Vien is loud, District 3 is better.

Viajeros de año sabático

The best city in Vietnam to find English-teaching work and the start-up internships that go with a boom town.

Nómadas digitales

Big-city infrastructure, cheap rents by nomad-hub standards and a sociable Thao Dien scene; heat and traffic are the price.

Viajeros del mundo a largo plazo

Gateway south to the Delta, west to Cambodia and the ferry to Phu Quoc; flights are cheap everywhere.

Viajeros FIRE

Low costs and good private hospitals, offset by no long-stay visa route, heat, noise and air quality.

Viajeros en pausa profesional

Vietnamese language courses, cooking schools and volunteering with social enterprises; a city that rewards curiosity.

Mochileros mayores

The traffic and heat are hard work; the museums, District 1 hotels and a Mekong cruise make a comfortable short stay.

Práctico

Seguridad

Generally safe; phone and bag snatching from motorbikes is the real risk, especially in Districts 1 and 3. Keep phones off the kerb side. Bui Vien at night has drink-spiking and pickpocket problems.

Estafas frecuentes

Cyclo and motorbike-taxi overcharging (use Grab), rigged taxi meters (Vinasun and Mai Linh are reliable), coconut-seller photo set-ups, and shoe-cleaning 'repairs'.

Conectividad y trabajo remoto

Fast fibre and 5G; coworking at Dreamplex, Toong, Circo, WeWork and the cafes of Thao Dien and District 3.

Vietnam's start-up and remote-work capital with the largest coworking scene in the country and a big expat population in Thao Dien. English teaching pays well by local standards; nomads value the visa simplicity and the cost.

Visado de larga estancia
90-day e-visa; no nomad visa

Editorial assessment (October 2026).

Vietnamese (southern dialect); English common in business, hospitality and among young people.

Etiqueta cultural

Tet is sacred: prices rise and shops close for a week. Dress modestly at temples and the palace; keep war-era politics respectful.

Seguro y salud

FV Hospital, Family Medical Practice and Vinmec Central Park are good; Singapore or Bangkok for complex care.

Información sobre visas

90-day e-visa; business visas are the route for those teaching or working locally.
