Resumen

Hanoi is Vietnam's intellectual, political and culinary capital, a city of lakes, French villas, Soviet blocks and a medieval Old Quarter whose 36 streets are still roughly organised by trade. The traffic is a river of scooters you learn to wade through; the reward is the best street food in the country, a cafe culture built on egg coffee and plastic stools, and a position at the top of the north with Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh, Sapa and Ha Giang all within reach.

Por qué visitarlo

For a city with real texture at backpacker prices, the gateway to northern Vietnam's landscapes, and food you will measure every other city against.

Clima y mejor época para visitar

Unlike the south, Hanoi has a real winter: December to February is grey, damp and 10 to 18°C. Spring drizzle in March and April, then a hot, humid, stormy summer with highs around 33°C from June to August; October and November are the golden months.

Mejor época: October to November and March to April. Bring a jacket for winter; it is colder than it looks.

Dónde alojarse

The Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem for hostels and short stays; Tay Ho (West Lake) for nomads, expats and monthly rentals; Ba Dinh for quieter French-quarter boutique hotels.

Barrios

Old Quarter (chaos and hostels), Hoan Kiem and the French Quarter (museums, boutique hotels), Tay Ho (lakeside expat and nomad life), Ba Dinh (government, quiet), Long Bien (local and cheap across the river).

Comida

Pho bo for breakfast, bun cha for lunch (the Obama-Bourdain shop is Bun Cha Huong Lien), banh cuon, cha ca La Vong, egg coffee at Cafe Giang. Eat on the stools where the locals do; the Old Quarter's Ta Hien beer corner for the evening.

Cómo moverse

Walk the Old Quarter, Grab (bike or car) everywhere else, the new Metro Line 2A and the bus network for the brave. The Reunification Express south and the Lao Cai night train for Sapa leave from Hanoi station.

Mochileros

Top of the north-to-south trail: Ha Long, Sapa and Ha Giang trips all book from the Old Quarter hostels, and the city itself costs $25 a day.

Viajeros de año sabático

English-teaching demand is high (a degree and TEFL are usually required), and the Ha Giang loop is a rite of passage.

Nómadas digitales

Tay Ho has the cafes, lakeside apartments and community; winters are cool and grey, which some people come for.

Viajeros del mundo a largo plazo

Overland links to Laos (Dien Bien Phu, Lao Cai) and China (Lao Cai, Dong Dang) make Hanoi a true crossroads.

Viajeros FIRE

Very cheap and culturally rich, but no retirement visa path and the air and climate are hard on some; many prefer Da Nang.

Viajeros en pausa profesional

Cooking courses, Vietnamese language schools and the northern mountains fill a month easily.

Mochileros mayores

The traffic, pavements and humidity demand energy; the French Quarter hotels, Ninh Binh day trips and a Ha Long cruise make a rewarding, comfortable version.

Práctico

Seguridad

Safe. Bag and phone snatching from scooters happens in the Old Quarter; keep phones away from the road. Crossing the street is a skill: walk steadily and predictably.

Estafas frecuentes

Taxi meters at the airport (use Grab or the official shuttle), shoe-shine and donut-seller overcharging, 'closed' hotel touts, and tour agencies selling cheap Ha Long cruises that are exactly as cheap as they sound.

Conectividad y trabajo remoto

Good fibre in apartments and cafes, strong 4G/5G. Coworking: Toong, UP, Hanoi Hub, and a West Lake cafe culture that tolerates laptops.

A growing nomad base, cheaper than Ho Chi Minh City and cooler in winter, with Tay Ho as the obvious neighbourhood. The 90-day e-visa and easy border runs to Laos make medium stays practical.

Visado de larga estancia
90-day e-visa; no nomad visa

Editorial assessment (October 2026).

Idioma

Vietnamese (northern dialect). English is common in hostels and tourism, less so with older people; translation apps work well.

Etiqueta cultural

Dress modestly at temples and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum (strict), use both hands when giving and receiving, keep calm in negotiations, and do not photograph military sites.

Seguro y salud

Family Medical Practice and Hanoi French Hospital for international care; serious cases are evacuated to Bangkok.

Información sobre visas

90-day e-visa for all nationalities via the official portal; 45-day exemption for many European passports.
