Resumen

Cusco was the centre of the Inca world and the Spanish built their churches on its temples' foundations, which is why the streets of the old town are lined with perfect Inca masonry under colonial balconies. It is the base for Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, the Salkantay and Ausangate treks and Rainbow Mountain, and a destination in itself: markets, the San Blas artists' quarter, Sacsayhuaman above the city, and a traveller community that has made it a long-stay town despite the altitude.

Por qué visitarlo

For the Inca heartland, some of the world's great treks, and a mountain city with character far beyond its role as a transit point.

Clima y mejor época para visitar

Dry season from May to September with sunny days (18 to 20°C) and cold nights (near freezing in June and July), the rainy season from November to March with afternoon rain and the greenest valley (February is wettest and the Inca Trail closes), and shoulder months in April and October. The altitude affects everyone for a day or two.

Mejor época: April to October; May and September for the balance of weather and crowds.

Dónde alojarse

San Blas for artists, cafes and stairs, the centre around the Plaza de Armas for convenience, Magisterio and Wanchaq for quieter monthly rentals at lower altitude-of-effort, and the Sacred Valley (Ollantaytambo, Pisac, Urubamba) for a lower, warmer base.

Barrios

Plaza de Armas and centre (hotels, agencies), San Blas (artists, cafes, views, stairs), Magisterio (quiet apartments), Wanchaq (local, value), the Sacred Valley towns.

Comida

Cuy (guinea pig) and alpaca for the curious, lomo saltado and aji de gallina, chicharron in Saylla, quinoa soup and the Andean grains, choclo con queso, the San Pedro market's juices and comedores, and cafes that have learned every traveller's breakfast.

Cómo moverse

Walkable centre (steep); taxis for a few soles (agree first); colectivos to the Sacred Valley; PeruRail and Inca Rail to Aguas Calientes; buses to Puno (Titicaca) and Arequipa; flights to Lima.

Por estilo de viaje

Una base de datos de destinos, siete vistas. La puntuación de compatibilidad es editorial, sobre cinco.

Mochileros

The great South American hub: cheap hostels, trekking groups forming nightly, Machu Picchu by the budget route and buses to Bolivia.

Viajeros de año sabático

Volunteering in the Sacred Valley, Spanish and Quechua courses, and treks that become the story of the year.

Nómadas digitales

Charming for a few weeks of light work; altitude, internet and the rainy season make it a poor base.

Viajeros del mundo a largo plazo

The centre of the Andean route between Lima, Titicaca, La Paz and Arequipa.

Viajeros FIRE

Wonderful to visit; the altitude rules it out as a residence for most.

Viajeros en pausa profesional

A multi-day trek, a volunteer placement in the valley, Spanish, and time at altitude that changes perspective.

Mochileros mayores

Machu Picchu is accessible by train and bus for any fitness level; acclimatise in the Sacred Valley first, take the altitude seriously, and the rewards are enormous.

Práctico

Seguridad

Safe city; altitude sickness is the main medical risk (ascend from Lima, rest, hydrate, consider the Sacred Valley first); bag theft in markets and on night buses; protests can block roads and the rail line.

Estafas frecuentes

Fake tour agencies selling Inca Trail permits that do not exist (book with licensed operators), massage touts, inflated taxi fares at night, and counterfeit notes.

Conectividad y trabajo remoto

Adequate: 20 to 60 Mbps in better cafes, hostels and apartments; a few coworking spaces (Selina, Coworking Cusco); 4G from Claro is fine in the city.

A long-stay traveller town more than a nomad hub: cafes, a community of trek-season regulars and workable internet, with the altitude and the rainy season as the practical constraints.

As Peru

Editorial assessment (October 2026).

Idioma

Spanish and Quechua; English in tourism.

Etiqueta cultural

Ask before photographing people in traditional dress (and pay if they pose for a living), buy from makers, respect Inca sites (no climbing walls), chew coca but do not try to take it home, and dress warmly in the evenings.

Seguro y salud

Altitude and trekking cover with helicopter evacuation; clinics in Cusco handle altitude sickness routinely; serious cases go to Lima.
