Overview

Cartagena's walled old town is the most beautiful colonial city in the Americas: bougainvillea balconies, plazas, the fortress of San Felipe and a Caribbean sea wall to walk at sunset. Getsemani, once the barrio outside the walls, is now the backpacker and nightlife quarter with its own charm; Bocagrande is a strip of high-rises; the Rosario islands and Baru are the beaches the city itself lacks. It is hot, humid, expensive by Colombian standards and worth every peso for a week.

Why visit

For the Caribbean and the colonial Americas in one walkable city, salsa and street life, and islands an hour away.

Where to stay

Getsemani for hostels, bars and murals, the walled city (San Diego quieter than the centre) for boutique stays, Manga for apartments across the bridge, Bocagrande for high-rise beach condos, and Baru or the islands for a few nights of water.

Neighbourhoods

Walled city (Centro, San Diego: historic, hotels), Getsemani (hostels, bars, murals), Manga (apartments, quiet), Bocagrande (beach high-rises), Pie de la Popa (value), Baru (beach).

Food

Arepas de huevo, carimañolas, fried fish with coconut rice and patacones, ceviche at La Cevicheria, posta negra, fruit from the palenqueras (ask before photographing, pay for the fruit), limonada de coco, the Bazurto market for the real thing, and a high-end scene inside the walls.

Getting around

Walkable centre; taxis (agree fares), the Transcaribe bus, boats to the islands from the Muelle de la Bodeguita, buses to Santa Marta (4 hours) and Barranquilla, and flights to Medellin and Bogota in an hour.

Things to do

The walled city and the ramparts at sunsetCafe del Mar is the cliche; the walls near Baluarte de Santo Domingo are free.
Getsemani's Plaza de la TrinidadThe evening gathering, street food and music.
Castillo San FelipeThe largest Spanish fortress in the Americas; go early.
Rosario islandsSnorkelling and beach clubs; Isla Grande and Baru for overnight.
La Popa conventThe hill view over the city and the bay.
Bazurto marketChaotic, hot, authentic; go with a guide.
Palenque de San BasilioThe first free African town in the Americas, a day trip.
Salsa at Cafe Havana or Donde FidelGetsemani's dance floors.

By travel style

One destination database, seven views. Fit is an editorial score out of five.

Backpackers

Getsemani's hostels are among South America's most sociable; the islands, Tayrona and the Lost City trek follow along the coast.

Gap Year Travelers

Salsa, Spanish and a Caribbean social scene; limited work options.

Digital Nomads

Beautiful for a few weeks with workable Wi-Fi; heat and cost push longer stays to Medellin.

Long-Term World Travelers

The Caribbean gateway to Colombia and the sailing-boat route to Panama through the San Blas islands.

FIRE Travelers

A winter home for some retirees in Bocagrande; heat, humidity and prices limit it for most.

Career Break Travelers

Learn salsa properly, sail to Panama, dive the islands, and read on the walls at dusk.

Older Backpackers

Flat, walkable, safe within the walls, with gorgeous boutique hotels; the heat dictates early mornings and the dry season.

Practical

Safety

The walled city and Getsemani are heavily policed and safe for walking by night; phone theft, aggressive touting, drug dealers in Getsemani and overcharging are the usual issues; avoid beaches and barrios outside the centre after dark.

Common scams

Palenqueras charging for photos (pay or do not take the picture), street vendors' 'gifts', taxi overcharging, boat trips that skip stops, and bars with inflated bills.

Connectivity and remote work

Decent fibre in hotels, apartments and cafes (30 to 100 Mbps); coworking at Selina and a few spaces in the centre; 4G is reliable.

A short-stay favourite more than a nomad base: the heat, prices and limited coworking send most remote workers to Medellin after a few weeks, but a month in Manga with fans and sea walks is a fine thing.

As Colombia

Editorial assessment (October 2026).

Language

Spanish (coastal accent, fast); English in tourism.

Cultural etiquette

Dress for the heat but not the beach in the old town, tip 10 percent, respect Afro-Colombian culture and the palenqueras as people rather than photo props, and dance when asked.

Insurance and health

Private clinics (Clinica Medihelp, Nuevo Hospital Bocagrande) handle most needs; Medellin or Bogota for complex care; heat illness is common.

Visa information

As Colombia: 90 days on arrival, extendable; the digital nomad visa for longer.
