Resumen

Few cities have Cape Town's geography: Table Mountain in the middle, the Atlantic on one side, False Bay on the other, penguins at Boulders, the Winelands forty minutes away and the Garden Route beyond. For travellers earning dollars, euros or pounds it is one of the best-value great cities in the world, with a remote-work community that swells from November to March and a food and wine scene far above its price. It is also a city of extreme inequality and real crime; long-stayers manage both with routine care.

Por qué visitarlo

For natural beauty that is hard to overstate, excellent infrastructure and food at low prices, and a time zone that lines up perfectly with Europe.

Clima y mejor época para visitar

Mediterranean and windy. Summer (November to March) is hot, dry and blown by the southeaster, with long evenings; autumn (April to May) is the local secret, calm and golden; winter (June to August) brings cold fronts, rain and green mountains; spring brings wildflowers up the west coast.

Mejor época: October to April; March and April for calm, warm days with fewer visitors.

Dónde alojarse

City Bowl (Gardens, Tamboerskloof, Vredehoek) for walkable life under the mountain; Sea Point and Green Point for the promenade and apartments; Woodstock and Observatory for cheaper, artsier, younger stays; Muizenberg and Kalk Bay on False Bay for surf and a village feel.

Barrios

City Bowl (Gardens, Tamboerskloof: cafes, walkable), Sea Point (promenade, apartments), Woodstock and Salt River (studios, markets, cheaper), Observatory (students, bohemian), Camps Bay and Clifton (beaches, money), Muizenberg and Kalk Bay (surf, village).

Comida

Cape Malay curries and bobotie in Bo-Kaap, braai culture, the Old Biscuit Mill and Oranjezicht markets on weekends, fish and chips in Kalk Bay, Winelands lunches in Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, and a world-class restaurant scene at mid-range prices.

Cómo moverse

Uber and Bolt are the default; the MyCiTi bus works along the Atlantic seaboard; the Southern Line train to Kalk Bay and Simon's Town is scenic (check current service). A hire car unlocks the peninsula and the Winelands.

Por estilo de viaje

Una base de datos de destinos, siete vistas. La puntuación de compatibilidad es editorial, sobre cinco.

Mochileros

Great hostels in Gardens and Observatory, free mountain hikes, cheap wine and the Garden Route by Baz Bus; safety rules are not optional.

Viajeros de año sabático

Volunteering and conservation placements are abundant (vet them carefully); surf and dive courses on False Bay; a year here is a classic.

Nómadas digitales

Europe's time zone, fibre, mountain and ocean, a lively November-to-March community; the price is the visa limit and seasonal rents.

Viajeros del mundo a largo plazo

The end or beginning of the Cape-to-Cairo dream; the Garden Route, Namibia and the overland trucks all start here.

Viajeros FIRE

Exceptional quality of life per dollar with private healthcare to match; South Africa's retired-person visa requires proof of income and is a genuine long-stay route.

Viajeros en pausa profesional

Surfing, diving with sharks and seals, wine courses, conservation work and hiking: a sabbatical that does not feel like a holiday.

Mochileros mayores

Comfortable guesthouses, a car, the peninsula and the Winelands make a superb month; take the safety advice seriously and it is a joy.

Práctico

Seguridad

Crime is a serious national issue and tourists are targeted for phone and bag theft; the precautions are consistent and workable: Uber rather than walking at night, nothing visible in cars, group hikes in daylight with a charged phone, avoid isolated beaches and the townships without a guide. Most long-stayers live normally within those rules.

Estafas frecuentes

Card skimming at ATMs (use machines inside banks), 'parking guards' demanding large tips, taxi touts at the airport, and fake charity collectors. Rental-car tyre puncture set-ups on the N2 near the airport.

Conectividad y trabajo remoto

Fibre is widespread (100 to 500 Mbps) in apartments and coworking; load-shedding has eased since 2024 but a backup power plan still matters. Coworking: Workshop17 (several), Cartel House, Ideas Cartel, many cafes.

One of the world's best winter escapes for European remote workers: same time zone, fibre, mountain and sea, and a large seasonal community. Rents double in season and the visa situation for stays beyond 90 days remains awkward.

Visado de larga estancia
90 days visa-free; remote work visa (2024) with high income threshold

Editorial assessment (October 2026).

Idioma

English universal; Afrikaans and isiXhosa widely spoken.

Etiqueta cultural

Tip 10 to 15 percent and a few rand to car guards and petrol attendants; be aware of the history (District Six, apartheid) and the present inequality; dress is relaxed.

Seguro y salud

Private healthcare (Netcare, Mediclinic) is excellent and affordable by Western standards; public hospitals are overstretched. Insurance is strongly advised.

Información sobre visas

90 days visa-free for most Western passports; the remote work visa announced in 2024 has a high income threshold and slow rollout; extensions are applied for early via VFS.
