Überblick

Buenos Aires is the most European city in the Americas and the most Argentine city anywhere: grand avenues and cafes notables, the Recoleta cemetery, San Telmo's Sunday market, Palermo's tree-lined streets of bars and boutiques, football at La Bombonera, steak at a parrilla at 10 p.m. and tango in a milonga at midnight. Its economy lurches between crisis and recovery, which makes prices unpredictable for locals and, in good years for the exchange rate, remarkable for visitors. The welcome is a 90-day stamp, renewable with a ferry to Uruguay.

Warum einen Besuch lohnt

For a great world city with a cultural life far beyond its means, a huge nomad and expat community, and Patagonia, Iguazu and the wine country beyond.

Nach Reisestil

Eine Reiseziel-Datenbank, sieben Ansichten. Die Bewertung ist ein redaktioneller Score von fünf.

Backpacker

Great hostels, cheap steak when the rate is right, free tango and parks, and buses to Iguazu, Mendoza and Patagonia.

Gap-Year-Reisende

Spanish schools, tango and volunteering; Argentina's working-holiday agreements cover many European and Commonwealth countries (not the US).

Digital Nomads

Culture, coworking and community in abundance; the exchange rate decides whether it is cheap or merely good value.

Langzeit-Weltreisende

The southern anchor of the continent: Patagonia, Uruguay, Chile and Brazil all open from here.

FIRE-Reisende

Excellent healthcare and a sophisticated city; the economic instability is the obstacle to planning in pesos, so most hold dollars.

Reisende in einer Auszeit vom Beruf

Tango, Spanish, wine, polo, Patagonian trekking: a sabbatical with glamour.

Ältere Rucksackreisende

Flat, cultured, walkable and full of good hotels and cafes; the late dinners and street-smart rules are the adjustments.

Praktisch

Sicherheit

Typical big-city crime: phone snatching (keep it away in the street), distraction thefts (the mustard trick), pickpockets on the Subte, and La Boca off the tourist streets; protests close the Avenida de Mayo regularly; the city is otherwise lively and walkable at night in Palermo and Recoleta.

Häufige Betrugsmaschen

Counterfeit pesos in change (learn the notes), taxi meter tricks (apps or radio taxis), the 'mustard on your jacket' distraction, and money-changers on Florida street (use official or reputable channels).

Konnektivität und Fernarbeit

Good fibre in Palermo and the central neighbourhoods (50 to 300 Mbps); coworking everywhere (La Maquinita, AreaTres, WeWork, HIT); Movistar and Claro 4G fine.

A huge nomad and expat city with coworking, culture and, when the exchange rate favours foreigners, extraordinary value; the economy's volatility cuts both ways, and the time zone sits between Europe and North America.

Langzeitvisum
90 days visa-free (+90 extension or border reset); digital nomad visa 180+180 days

Editorial assessment (October 2026).

Sprache

Spanish (Rioplatense: vos, sh for ll and y); English common among the educated and in Palermo; Italian influence everywhere.

Kulturelle Etikette

Kiss on one cheek to greet, dinner at 10, mate is shared (do not stir the straw), football and politics are serious, tipping is 10 percent in cash, and nobody arrives on time.

Versicherung und Gesundheit

Good public hospitals (free even for foreigners) and excellent private ones (Hospital Aleman, Italiano); insurance still advisable; dengue in summer.

Visuminformationen

90 days visa-free, extendable once at Migraciones or reset with a ferry to Uruguay; the digital nomad visa (180 days, renewable once) exists but is rarely needed.
