Vue d'ensemble

Bangkok is where most long trips through Asia begin, and it rewards more than the two jet-lagged nights it usually gets. It is a city of neighbourhoods rather than sights: the canals of Thonburi, the Chinese shophouses of Talat Noi, the office-tower cafes of Sathorn, the night markets of Ratchada. Flights, trains and buses to everywhere leave from here, prices are low for a megacity, and the street food is the best in the world by almost any measure that counts.

Pourquoi visiter

Because it is the easiest big city in Asia to arrive in without a plan. English is workable, transport is cheap and logical once you learn the BTS map, there is a hostel for every budget and a food stall on every corner. It is also the best place in the region to buy gear, fix a laptop, see a dentist or renew a visa.

Détail du budget

A dorm bed in a good hostel near Phra Athit or Ari costs 300 to 450 baht; a clean private room with air conditioning 800 to 1,400 baht. Street meals are 50 to 80 baht, a BTS ride 17 to 62 baht. Mid-range travellers spend most of the difference on air-conditioned restaurants, Grab rides and rooftop drinks, which cost Western prices.

Où aller d'autre en Novembre →

Où séjourner

Backpackers cluster on Khao San and the quieter Rambuttri and Phra Athit streets; nomads and longer stays favour Ari, Phrom Phong and On Nut along the BTS. Monthly serviced apartments start around 12,000 baht in On Nut and 25,000 in Thonglor. Avoid anything far from a train line unless you like traffic.

Quartiers

Phra Athit for a quieter old-town base, Ari for cafes and calm, Thonglor and Ekkamai for nightlife and design, On Nut for cheap long stays on the BTS, Silom and Sathorn for business travellers.

Nourriture

Eat where the queue is. Chinatown (Yaowarat) after dark, boat noodles at Victory Monument, Isaan grills near Ari, the food courts under every mall for air-conditioned bargains. Michelin-starred street stalls exist; so do 40-baht bowls that beat them.

Se déplacer

BTS Skytrain and MRT cover the business districts; the Chao Phraya Express boat is the scenic way to the old city; Grab and metered taxis fill the gaps (insist on the meter). Hualamphong's replacement, Krung Thep Aphiwat, is the new rail hub for Chiang Mai and the south.

Activités

Wat Pho and the Grand PalaceGo at 8 a.m. before the heat and the tour groups; dress code enforced.
Chinatown at nightYaowarat Road's seafood stalls and the lanes behind them.
Chatuchak Weekend Market15,000 stalls; go early, stay hydrated.
Klong tour in ThonburiA long-tail boat through the canals shows the city that existed before the roads.
Bang KrachaoThe green lung across the river: rent a bicycle, ride the raised paths.
Talat Noi and Charoen KrungStreet art, old Chinese shophouses, the city's best cafes.
Rooftop sunsetAny of the Sathorn or Silom towers; the drink is the ticket.
Day trip to AyutthayaAn hour by train for the ruined former capital.

Par style de voyage

Une base de données de destinations, sept vues. L'adéquation est un score éditorial sur cinq.

Routards

The classic first night in Asia. Hostels on Phra Athit and in Ari beat Khao San for sleep; use the city to sort SIM, cash and onward tickets.

Voyageurs en année sabbatique

TEFL courses, the region's cheapest flights and a huge social scene make it a natural hub to return to between legs.

Nomades numériques

Fast fibre, coworking on every BTS line and the DTV visa. The trade-off is heat, traffic and a city that never quite switches off.

Voyageurs longue durée dans le monde

The logistics capital of the continent: visas for neighbouring countries, gear, dentists, and overland links in every direction.

Voyageurs FIRE

World-class private healthcare at a fraction of Western prices and serviced apartments from $800 a month; the Long-Term Resident and retirement visa routes exist for the over-50s.

Voyageurs en pause carrière

Courses (Thai cooking, massage, Muay Thai, language) are cheap and well organised; a fortnight here resets most people's pace.

Voyageurs sac au dos expérimentés

Comfortable guesthouses for $35, excellent hospitals and air-conditioned transit. Plan sightseeing for early morning; the midday heat is the real obstacle.

Pratique

Sécurité

Low violent crime. Watch bags on crowded transit, use the meter or an app in taxis, and treat the traffic as the main hazard. Tourist police (1155) speak English.

Arnaques courantes

The 'Grand Palace is closed' gem-shop detour, tuk-tuk 'tours' with shop stops, tailor touts, and rigged taxi meters at the airport (use the official taxi queue or the Airport Rail Link). Ping-pong show touts in Patpong overcharge violently; walk away.

Connectivité et travail à distance

Fast everywhere. Hostels and cafes routinely have 100 Mbps fibre; 5G from AIS and True covers the city. Coworking from 300 baht a day (True Digital Park, The Hive, JustCo).

A genuine remote-work city: cheap monthly apartments with fibre, coworking everywhere, a large expat and nomad community, and the region's best flight connections. The DTV (2024) is designed for exactly this.

Editorial assessment (October 2026) of typical fibre speeds in monthly rentals and coworking spaces; not a measurement.

Langue

Thai. English is workable in tourism, transport and anywhere young; a few phrases (sawasdee khrap/kha, khop khun) go a long way. Street signs are bilingual on main roads.

Étiquette culturelle

Shoes off in homes and temples; cover shoulders and knees at temples; never touch anyone's head or point feet at Buddha images; the monarchy is protected by strict lese-majeste law, so keep opinions private.

Assurance et santé

Private hospitals (Bumrungrad, Bangkok Hospital, Samitivej) are excellent and bill accordingly; insurance with direct billing saves a large deposit.

Informations sur les visas

Most Western passports enter visa-exempt for 60 days (extendable 30 at Chaeng Watthana immigration). The DTV is the long-stay option for remote workers.
