Overview

Athens was a city people flew through on the way to the islands; now it is a city people stay in. The reasons: low rents by European capital standards, a cafe and nightlife culture that spills onto the street, Koukaki and Pangrati's neighbourhood life a walk from the Acropolis, the Riviera beaches on the tram line, and Piraeus's ferries to a hundred islands. It is chaotic, graffitied and loud, and the people who love it love it for that.

Why visit

For Europe's deepest history at its lowest capital prices, a greatly improved food scene, and island access that no other city matches.

Where to stay

Koukaki and Makrygianni under the Acropolis, Pangrati and Mets for cafes and locals, Exarchia for students and politics, Kypseli for cheap apartments and a lively multicultural street life, Plaka for postcard stays, Glyfada and Vouliagmeni on the coast.

Neighbourhoods

Koukaki (Acropolis, cafes), Pangrati and Mets (local, lively), Exarchia (students, anarchists, bookshops), Kypseli (cheap, diverse, up-and-coming), Plaka and Monastiraki (tourist core), Kolonaki (affluent), Glyfada (coast).

Food

Souvlaki and gyros (O Kostas, Hoocut), fish at Piraeus's Mikrolimano, horta and grilled meats in Pangrati tavernas, the Varvakios central market, loukoumades, koulouri from street carts, and a new wave of Greek cooking in Koukaki. Lunch is cheap; wine by the carafe cheaper.

Getting around

Metro (three lines, airport link), trams to the coast, buses, and Beat or Uber (licensed taxis). KTEL buses and the Piraeus and Rafina ports for the islands; the Peloponnese is a bus or car away.

By travel style

Backpackers

Cheap by capital standards, with hostels in Psyrri and Koukaki, souvlaki economics and the islands a ferry away.

Gap Year Travelers

Island hospitality work for EU citizens, Greek courses and a sociable base between legs.

Digital Nomads

Low rents, a visa, sun and a growing scene; summer is for the islands, the rest of the year for the city.

Long-Term World Travelers

The hinge between Europe and the Levant: ferries, buses to the Balkans and Turkey, and the islands as a slow route.

FIRE Travelers

The FIP visa, low costs and a Mediterranean climate; healthcare is good privately.

Career Break Travelers

Ancient history courses, sailing, Greek lessons and island-hopping with a laptop closed.

Older Backpackers

The Acropolis slopes and summer heat need planning; spring and autumn, a central apartment and the islands make a rich, easy stay.

Practical

Safety

Low violent crime; pickpocketing on the metro (especially the airport line) and in Monastiraki; Omonia and parts of Exarchia late at night feel edgy. Protests close Syntagma regularly and predictably.

Common scams

Bar invitations near Syntagma that end in enormous bills, taxi detours from the airport (fixed fares apply), and 'closed' attractions redirecting to shops.

Connectivity and remote work

Fibre is widespread in newer apartments and patchier in old blocks; coworking at Stone Soup, Impact Hub, Found.ation and many cafes; 5G is good.

One of the cheapest EU capitals for remote work, with a nomad visa, improving infrastructure, sun, islands and a community that grew fast after 2020. Summer heat sends many to the islands; winters are the bargain.

Long-stay visa
Schengen 90/180; Greece digital nomad visa; FIP visa for retirees

Editorial assessment (October 2026).

Language

Greek; English widely spoken by younger people and in tourism.

Cultural etiquette

Greet with kalimera, do not refuse hospitality, dinner is late, church dress is modest, and Greeks will argue about politics with you and enjoy it.

Insurance and health

Public hospitals are stretched; private (Hygeia, Metropolitan, Iaso) are good; insurance for non-EU visitors.

Visa information

Schengen 90/180; Greece's digital nomad visa (one year, income 3,500 euros a month net) and the Financially Independent Person visa for retirees.
