Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti and Zanzibar in one country. For long-stay travellers the draw is Zanzibar's east coast, where kitesurfing villages and a growing remote-work scene sit alongside Stone Town's Swahili history.

Entry and visas

Most nationalities need a visa: a 90-day single-entry tourist visa is available as an e-visa in advance or on arrival (US citizens must take the 12-month multiple-entry visa at a higher fee). Zanzibar additionally requires mandatory travel insurance purchased from the semi-autonomous government's scheme since 2024.

Safety

Petty theft in Dar es Salaam and Stone Town after dark; bag snatching from motorbikes. Zanzibar is conservative and Muslim: dress modestly away from the beach. Road accidents are the main physical risk on the mainland.

Official advisory: Tanzania - Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution (U.S. Department of State, ). UK FCDO advice ↗

Health

Malaria is present across the country including Zanzibar: prophylaxis is standard advice. Yellow fever certificate required if arriving from an endemic country. Private clinics in Stone Town are basic; Dar es Salaam or Nairobi for serious care.

Money

Shillings; US dollars (post-2009 notes) accepted for tours and hotels. ATMs in Stone Town and Paje; fees apply and machines run dry at weekends. Cash for everything local.

Tipping: Expected for guides, drivers and safari staff; 10 percent in restaurants · Tap water: Not drinkable

Getting around

Dala-dalas (minibuses) are cheap and crowded; private transfers across Zanzibar cost 30 to 50 USD. Azam Marine ferries link Dar and Stone Town; Precision Air and Coastal fly short hops.

SIMs and connectivity

Vodacom, Airtel and Halotel sell cheap SIMs; Zanzibar coverage is decent on the coast and 4G is adequate for remote work in Paje and Nungwi.
