Indonesia

Seventeen thousand islands, of which most long-term travellers see one: Bali. Beyond it lie Java's volcanoes, Komodo, Flores, Sulawesi and Raja Ampat, some of the world's best diving, and prices that fall sharply the moment you leave the Bali bubble.

Entry and visas

Most visitors use the Visa on Arrival (B1), valid 30 days and extendable once for another 30, purchasable online as an e-VOA before travel. Indonesia also has a remote worker visa (E33G) and the longer-stay B211A visit visa; both have income or sponsorship conditions that change frequently.

Safety

Scooter accidents are by far the most common serious injury among visitors in Bali. Rip currents on south-coast beaches, methanol-tainted spirits, and petty theft in Kuta and Canggu are the other recurring issues. Earthquakes and volcanic activity are facts of life across the archipelago.

Official advisory: Indonesia - Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution (U.S. Department of State, ). UK FCDO advice ↗

Health

Dengue is widespread; rabies is endemic in Bali, so dog and monkey bites need immediate treatment. Good private clinics exist in Denpasar and Ubud; anything complex goes to Singapore. Travellers' diarrhoea (Bali belly) is near-universal in the first weeks.

Money

The rupiah is around 16,000 to the dollar. Use bank-attached ATMs (skimming is a known problem), and never accept help at a machine. Cards work in Bali's restaurants and hotels; cash elsewhere.

Tipping: Not required; 5 to 10 percent appreciated where no service charge is added · Tap water: Not drinkable

Getting around

Grab and Gojek handle city and short rides (some Bali villages ban them). Perama shuttles, Bluebird taxis and private drivers (around 50 USD a day) cover the rest. Fast boats reach the Gilis and Lombok; domestic flights are cheap but delays are routine.

SIMs and connectivity

Telkomsel has the widest coverage; XL is cheaper in cities. Register your phone's IMEI if staying over 90 days or your SIM may be blocked. eSIMs are easy to buy online.
