Greece

Athens has quietly become one of Europe's best-value capitals for long stays, and the islands remain the dream that put Santorini sunsets on every travel poster. Greece's digital nomad visa and relaxed pace suit slow travellers of every budget.

Entry and visas

Schengen rules apply. Greece's digital nomad visa (since 2021) grants one year, extendable to a two-year residence permit, with a monthly income threshold of 3,500 euros net. The Financially Independent Person (FIP) visa suits retirees.

Safety

Low crime; pickpocketing around Monastiraki and on the Athens metro. Summer wildfires and heat waves have become serious; strikes and protests in central Athens are frequent but predictable.

Official advisory: Greece - Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions (U.S. Department of State, ). UK FCDO advice ↗

Health

Good healthcare in Athens and larger islands; small islands have basic clinics and rely on evacuation. Insurance for non-EU visitors.

Money

Cards widely accepted after the 2015 reforms; some island tavernas still prefer cash. Avoid Euronet ATMs.

Tipping: Rounding up or 5 to 10 percent · Tap water: Safe in Athens and most of the mainland; bottled on many islands

Getting around

Ferries (Blue Star, SeaJets, Hellenic Seaways) are the lifeblood of island travel; book summer crossings ahead. KTEL buses cover the mainland; trains are limited. Uber works in Athens via licensed taxis.

SIMs and connectivity

Cosmote has the best coverage, then Vodafone and Nova; EU roaming applies.
