Croatia

A thousand islands and a Roman emperor's palace that became a city. Croatia joined the euro and Schengen in 2023, which simplified travel but pushed summer prices up; the shoulder seasons are when the coast makes sense.

Safety

Very safe. Sea urchins, strong sun and the occasional wildfire are the practical hazards. Leftover mines exist in a few inland areas from the 1990s war; they are marked.

Official advisory: Croatia - Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions (U.S. Department of State, ). UK FCDO advice ↗

Health

Good healthcare in cities; island clinics are basic. Insurance recommended for non-EU visitors.

Money

Cards widely accepted; cash still useful on islands and at markets. Accommodation prices in July and August are two to three times those of May or October.

Tipping: Rounding up or around 10 percent in restaurants · Tap water: Safe to drink

Getting around

Jadrolinija and Krilo ferries and catamarans connect the islands; buses (FlixBus, Arriva) are the main land link since rail is sparse along the coast. Uber and Bolt work in Split and Zagreb.

SIMs and connectivity

A1, Hrvatski Telekom and Telemach offer tourist SIMs; EU roaming applies.
