Colombia

South America's most varied country in one passport stamp: Medellín's spring-all-year nomad hub, Cartagena's Caribbean walls, coffee country, two oceans and the Amazon. Colombia's reinvention over two decades is one of travel's great stories.

Safety

Big-city street crime (phone snatching, scopolamine druggings via drinks or dating apps) is the real risk in Bogotá, Medellín and Cartagena; rural areas near the Venezuelan border and parts of the Pacific coast and Cauca carry government warnings. The national advice 'no dar papaya' (don't make yourself an easy target) is sound.

Official advisory: Colombia - Level 3: Reconsider Travel (U.S. Department of State, ). UK FCDO advice ↗

Health

Medellín and Bogotá have excellent private hospitals; Colombia is a medical tourism destination. Yellow fever vaccination is required for some national parks and recommended for the Amazon and Caribbean lowlands. Bogotá's altitude (2,640 m) catches people out.

Money

Pesos at roughly 4,000 to the dollar. Cards widely accepted in cities; cash on the coast and in towns. ATM fees vary; Davivienda and Bancolombia are standard.

Tipping: 10 percent service (propina voluntaria) is proposed on restaurant bills · Tap water: Safe in Bogotá and Medellín; bottled on the coast

Getting around

Flying is often cheaper than the 10-hour mountain bus rides: Avianca, LATAM and Wingo compete hard. Medellín's Metro is the country's pride. Uber operates in a legal grey zone; Cabify and inDrive are alternatives.

SIMs and connectivity

Claro has the widest coverage; Tigo and Movistar are cheaper. SIMs are sold at Claro shops and some Éxito supermarkets with passport.
