Argentina

A European-feeling capital at South American prices (when the exchange rate cooperates), Patagonia, the Andes, Iguazú and the world's best steak. Argentina's economics are volatile; its appeal to long-stay travellers is permanent.

Entry and visas

US, Canadian, EU, UK, Australian and most Latin American citizens receive 90 days visa-free, extendable once at immigration or by a border hop to Uruguay. Argentina introduced a digital nomad visa in 2022 for up to 180 days, renewable once; uptake has been limited because the tourist stamp is so generous.

Remote work and long stays

Digital Nomad visa (up to 180 days): 180 days, renewable once, for remote workers; rarely used because the 90-day tourist stamp plus extension is simpler. official source ↗ Official eligibility verification required

Safety

Buenos Aires has typical big-city street crime (phone theft, distraction scams); the rest of the country is relaxed. Protests regularly close central avenues. Hyperinflation makes prices unpredictable, not unsafe.

Official advisory: Argentina - Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions (U.S. Department of State, ). UK FCDO advice ↗

Health

Good public and private healthcare in Buenos Aires; public hospitals treat foreigners. Dengue outbreaks in the north in late summer. Insurance recommended.

Money

The peso and its multiple exchange rates are a saga. Since 2024 foreign cards often get a rate close to the parallel 'blue' rate, which makes paying by card simple again; check current conditions before relying on cash dollars. ATM withdrawals are capped low with high fees; Western Union transfers are a common workaround.

Tipping: 10 percent in restaurants, in cash · Tap water: Safe in Buenos Aires

Getting around

Long-distance buses (cama class) are comfortable; distances are vast, so Aerolíneas Argentinas, Flybondi and JetSmart are worth it. SUBE card for Buenos Aires transit; Uber and Cabify operate.

SIMs and connectivity

Claro, Movistar and Personal sell SIMs; Patagonia coverage is patchy.
