Albania

The Balkans' breakout destination: Riviera beaches that rival Greece at half the price, the Accursed Mountains for serious hiking, and a capital in the middle of a design-led reinvention. Albania is outside Schengen, which makes it a strategic base for Europe-hoppers.

Entry and visas

Albania admits most nationalities visa-free for up to 90 days in 180, and US citizens for up to one year. It is outside the Schengen Area, so days here do not count against the 90/180 Schengen limit. The Unique Permit for digital nomads allows a one-year renewable stay with proof of remote work.

Safety

Low crime against visitors. Road standards and driving habits are the main risk; mountain roads need care. Stray dogs are common.

Official advisory: Albania - Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution (U.S. Department of State, ). UK FCDO advice ↗

Health

Public healthcare is limited; private clinics in Tirana are adequate for routine problems. Carry insurance that covers evacuation.

Money

Cash-heavy outside Tirana; euros are often accepted at a rough rate but lek gets better prices. ATMs charge fees of several hundred lek; Credins and BKT are the most reliable.

Tipping: Rounding up or around 10 percent · Tap water: Generally treated in Tirana; most visitors drink bottled

Getting around

No functioning passenger rail; furgons (shared minibuses) and buses leave when full from informal terminals. Car hire is the easiest way to see the mountains and coast.

SIMs and connectivity

Vodafone Albania and One sell cheap tourist SIMs with generous data; speeds are good in cities.
