About us
Work anywhere, explore everywhere.
Digital Backpacker is a research and planning platform for independent, long-term travel: backpacking, gap years, digital nomad life, round-the-world journeys, financially independent travel, career breaks and independent travel later in life. The brand promise is simple: real tools, real places, a bigger life.
What we publish
One destination database behind every page and tool: currently 40 destinations in 27 countries, each with dated daily cost estimates by tier, monthly rental estimates, WMO climate normals, lifestyle-fit notes for all seven travel styles, safety, scams, connectivity, etiquette and visa notes; 50 routes; 162 visa rule summaries and 30 work and residence programmes with official links and last-verified dates; a library of guides; and 14 planning tools that show their assumptions.
How the numbers are made
Costs are editorial estimates compiled from published accommodation, food and transport prices, labelled with a date, a method and a confidence level, and never described as live. Climate figures are long-term monthly normals from the WMO World Weather Information Service as published by national meteorological services. Exchange rates are indicative daily mid-rates. Advisory levels come from the U.S. Department of State. Scores on the World Travel Index are either derived from that data or marked as editorial assessments; where we have no defensible figure we say “unavailable” rather than invent one. The full detail is on the Methodology and Data Sources pages.
What we will never do
- Fabricate visitor counts, user numbers, reviews, ratings or testimonials. The counts on the home page come from the database.
- Present an estimate as a quote, a normal as a forecast, or a visa summary as an eligibility decision.
- Give financial, legal, immigration or medical advice. Everything here is research for your own verification.
- Let advertisers or affiliates influence rankings; sponsored placements, if they ever exist, will be labelled.
AI assistance and imagery
Portions of this site’s content and data compilation are produced with AI-assisted research; figures are indicative and may be out of date, so verify with primary sources. Ask the Data and the data briefs are generated from our own data under rules that forbid advice and invented numbers, and are labelled wherever they appear. Photographs of real places are licensed and credited to their photographers; decorative and concept images may be generated and are disclosed here rather than captioned individually.
